Chapter 12 - The Quiet House

The house on Staten Island looked ordinary enough to make it frightening.
It stood behind bare maple trees on a private road overlooking the water.
No gates displayed the Genovese name.
No guards stood in obvious positions.
A porch light glowed beside a dark front door.
Sophia watched from inside a parked SUV two blocks away.
Vanessa sat beside her.
Neither woman spoke for several minutes.
Dante and Enzo reviewed the property layout in the front seats.
A second team moved toward the old greenhouse from the rear.
Sophia looked at Vanessa.
"What was your mother's name?"
Vanessa kept her eyes on the house.
"Luciana."
"Was she Italian?"
"Born in New Jersey."
"She hated being called Lucy."
Sophia almost smiled.
"My mother hated being called Mary."
Vanessa glanced at her.
For one strange second, they were simply two daughters remembering women who had disappeared too soon.
Then Vanessa looked away.
"I am not asking you to forgive me."
"Good."
"I don't deserve it."
"Also good."
Vanessa's mouth twitched despite herself.
"You really are difficult."
Sophia looked at her.
"That is rich coming from you."
The faint amusement disappeared.
"I was horrible to you."
"Yes."
"You can stop agreeing so quickly."
"No."
Vanessa almost laughed.
Dante turned in the front seat.
"We are moving."
Sophia unfastened her seat belt.
"I am coming."
"You are staying in the vehicle."
"My father is inside."
"We do not know that."
"Which is why I am coming."
Dante looked at Vanessa.
"Tell her."
Vanessa shrugged.
"I tried ordering her around once."
"It did not go well."
Enzo coughed to hide a laugh.
Dante muttered something under his breath.
"Fine."
"You stay behind Enzo."
Sophia smiled sweetly.
"Of course."
Dante stared at her.
"That answer frightened me more than an argument."
They moved through the trees toward the rear property line.
The greenhouse had not been used in years.
Broken glass glittered in several panes.
Dead vines clung to metal supports.
Vanessa found a rusted latch beneath an old planting table.
"Here."
Enzo pulled up a trapdoor hidden beneath rotting boards.
A narrow staircase descended into darkness.
Sophia smelled damp earth and old stone.
Vanessa stopped at the opening.
Her face had gone pale.
Dante noticed.
"You do not have to go down."
Vanessa shook her head.
"Yes, I do."
"Why?"
"Because I spent twenty years pretending this house did not exist."
She stepped onto the first stair.
"I am done pretending."
They entered a tunnel barely wide enough for two people.
Enzo's team went first.
Sophia followed Dante.
Vanessa remained behind her.
Halfway through, Sophia heard Vanessa's breathing become uneven.
She stopped.
"Are you okay?"
Vanessa looked embarrassed.
"Keep moving."
Sophia lowered her voice.
"You can go back."
"I said keep moving."
The sharpness sounded familiar now.
It was fear wearing expensive clothes.
Sophia continued without comment.
At the end of the tunnel, Enzo opened a steel door into a basement utility room.
The house was silent above them.
Too silent.
Dante raised one hand.
Everyone stopped.
A faint television played somewhere upstairs.
Then a chair scraped across a floor.
Sophia's heart pounded.
They climbed the stairs.
The basement hallway opened into a kitchen.
A man sat at the table with his back to them.
Enzo's guard restrained him before he could stand.
Dante looked toward the next room.
"Where is Anthony Rossi?"
The man smiled.
"Upstairs."
Sophia moved.
Dante caught her arm.
"Wait."
"He said upstairs."
"Which is why you wait."
Enzo sent two men ahead.
A voice came through his earpiece.
"Second floor clear."
"One male in rear bedroom."
Sophia was already climbing.
Dante followed.
Anthony lay on a bed with one wrist secured to the frame.
The tape had been removed from his mouth.
He looked bruised, exhausted, and furious.
"Sophia."
She crossed the room.
For a second, every angry thing she had said to him disappeared.
She touched his face.
"Are you hurt?"
"Nothing broken."
"Good."
Then she slapped his shoulder.
"Ow."
"That is for getting kidnapped again."
Anthony stared at her.
Then, incredibly, he laughed.
It broke something inside Sophia.
She hugged him.
Only for a moment.
Then she stepped back.
"Do not mistake that for forgiveness."
"I won't."
Dante unlocked the restraint with a key taken from the guard downstairs.
"Where is Mercer?"
Anthony rubbed his wrist.
"He left an hour ago."
"Carlo?"
"Never saw him."
Vanessa appeared in the doorway.
Anthony's expression changed.
"Her."
Sophia turned.
"She brought us here."
Anthony stared at Vanessa with open suspicion.
"She paid me to lie about you."
Vanessa nodded.
"I did."
Anthony seemed almost offended that she admitted it.
"You set me up."
"You took the money."
"You said -"
Sophia stepped between them.
"Not now."
Anthony looked at his daughter.
"She is the reason this happened."
Sophia's patience snapped.
"No."
The room went quiet.
"She is responsible for what she did."
"Mercer is responsible for what he did."
"Carlo is responsible for what he did."
Sophia pointed at Anthony.
"And you are responsible for what you did."
Her father stared at her.
"Nobody gets to hand their choices to someone else anymore."
Dante watched Sophia with an expression she could not read.
Anthony looked down.
"You're right."
Sophia waited for an excuse.
None came.
That surprised her more than anything else that night.
Enzo entered the room.
"We found cameras throughout the house."
Vanessa's face went white.
"Old?"
"Some."
"Some are live."
Vanessa stared at him.
"Where?"
"Bedrooms."
"Hallway."
"Basement room."
Vanessa moved toward the wall as if suddenly unable to stand.
Sophia understood.
Her mother had been watched here too.
Dante's voice softened.
"Vanessa."
She shook her head.
"Do not pity me."
"I wasn't."
"Good."
She straightened.
"Destroy every camera after you copy the files."
Enzo nodded.
"Already planned."
A guard called from downstairs.
They had found a locked office.
Inside were dozens of folders.
Most were empty.
One contained photographs of Sophia.
Her leaving Veluto.
Her entering the Moretti house.
Her buying groceries with Elena.
Her sitting beside Dante in a car.
Her visiting Anthony.
The surveillance went back to the night of Table Nine.
Sophia turned a photograph over.
A date and time were written on the back.
Someone had begun following her less than three hours after she first spoke Sicilian to Elena.
"Vanessa?" Sophia asked.
Vanessa shook her head.
"I hired someone on day six."
Dante looked at her.
"You what?"
"I said I was jealous, not sane."
Sophia held up the earlier photograph.
"Then this wasn't you."
Vanessa's face tightened.
"No."
Dante examined the folder.
"Carlo knew about Sophia before Vanessa did."
Sophia remembered the old warning in her mother's letter.
Never let the Genoveses near my daughter.
Maria had feared Carlo specifically.
Twenty-three years later, Carlo had recognized Sophia before Vanessa ever decided she was a romantic threat.
Enzo found a laptop in a locked drawer.
Its recent browser history contained searches for Maria Rossi, Teresa Rossi, Saint Cecilia's School, Veluto Restaurant, and Dante Moretti's household staff.
Then Enzo found an email draft.
It had never been sent.
The recipient was Paul Mercer.
The sender account belonged to Carlo Genovese.
The message contained one sentence.
If the Rossi girl recognizes Elena, move the wedding forward and recover what her mother stole.
Sophia read it twice.
"He knew I might meet Elena."
Dante's eyes narrowed.
"Or he arranged it."
That possibility hit everyone at once.
Sophia remembered the first night at Veluto.
Table Nine.
Elena refusing food.
Sophia assigned to serve them.
She had assumed chance had put her beside Elena Moretti.
What if it had not?
"Who made the reservation that night?" Sophia asked.
Dante looked at Enzo.
"My office."
"Who chose Veluto?"
Dante's face changed.
"Michael."
Sophia's stomach tightened.
Michael had been under Mercer's control for six months.
The meeting that changed her life might have been engineered from the beginning.
Anthony spoke from behind them.
"Maria used to say there were no coincidences around Carlo Genovese."
Sophia turned slowly.
"You remember that now?"
Anthony looked ashamed.
"There is a lot I remember that I spent years trying not to."
Sophia stared at him.
"Then start remembering out loud."
Anthony sat in the office chair.
His hands shook.
"The night your mother brought the metal box home, she told me Carlo would come for it someday."
Dante moved closer.
"What else?"
"She said if he ever found the first three ledgers, it wouldn't matter."
Sophia frowned.
"There are only three ledgers in the box."
Anthony looked at her.
"Exactly."
Silence settled over the room.
Sophia felt her pulse quicken.
"What are you saying?"
Anthony swallowed.
"Those were decoys."
Dante's gaze sharpened.
"Where is the real ledger?"
Anthony closed his eyes.
"Maria gave it to someone named L.M."
Sophia thought of the note.
L.M. keeps the originals under the church.
"Who is L.M.?"
Anthony looked toward Dante.
"Your father knew."
Dante's jaw tightened.
"My father is dead."
Anthony nodded.
"So is the man Maria trusted."
"Who?"
Anthony looked at Sophia.
"Father Luca Mancini."
Sophia knew the name.
Father Luca had baptized her.
He had buried her mother.
He had died seven years ago.
Her breath caught.
"Under the church."
Dante understood at the same moment.
St. Augustine's Church.
The church where the wedding was scheduled for Saturday.
May you like
The real evidence had been hidden beneath the wedding location for more than twenty years.
And Carlo Genovese had just ordered Sophia to bring Maria's box directly to it.
