Chapter 2 - The Debt That Came Back

Sophia stared at the photograph until the people in it seemed to blur.

Her father looked smaller than she remembered, his shoulders rounded beneath an old wool coat and his head bent toward the woman beside him.

Vanessa looked perfectly composed.

She was not dragging Anthony into the club.

She was guiding him.

That frightened Sophia more.

"When was this taken?"

Enzo checked the timestamp.

"Forty-seven minutes ago."

Sophia looked at Dante.

"We are going there."

"No."

"I wasn't asking."

Dante took his coat from the back of a chair.

"Neither was I."

Sophia stepped in front of him.

"My father is inside that building because of your fiancee."

"Which is precisely why you are staying here."

"You bought his debt without my permission, brought me into your house, and now the woman you are marrying has him in a gambling club."

Her voice stayed low, but every word sharpened.

"You do not get to lock me in a kitchen while you decide what happens to my family."

Enzo looked at the floor with the expression of a man who suddenly found marble fascinating.

Dante studied Sophia for several seconds.

"The Lucky Ace is not a restaurant."

"I know."

"The men inside will not care that you are angry."

"Then they have something in common with me."

Enzo's mouth twitched.

Dante saw it.

"Not one word."

"Wouldn't dream of it, boss."

Sophia crossed her arms.

"I am going."

Dante's eyes hardened.

"And if I say no?"

"I call a taxi."

"You would walk into that club alone?"

"If my father is there, yes."

Something flickered across Dante's face.

It was not approval exactly.

It looked uncomfortably close to respect.

"Fine."

Sophia blinked.

"Fine?"

"You stay beside me."

"I don't take orders well."

"I noticed."

Ten minutes later, Sophia sat in the rear of Dante's SUV while Manhattan slid past in gray winter light.

Enzo drove.

A second vehicle followed behind them.

Sophia hated that she noticed these things now.

Sixteen days earlier, a black SUV had been a symbol of danger.

Now she knew which one belonged to Dante, which driver worked mornings, and which bodyguard always carried peppermint gum for Elena.

She had become comfortable too quickly.

Vanessa had noticed.

That was the problem.

"Why would she take him there?" Sophia asked.

Dante looked at the photograph again.

"To send me a message."

"Through my father?"

"Through you."

Sophia felt her stomach turn.

"I told you I am not part of whatever is between you two."

"Vanessa may not agree."

"Then explain it to her."

Dante glanced out the window.

"I have tried explaining many things to Vanessa."

"Apparently not boundaries."

His eyes returned to hers.

"Apparently not."

The Lucky Ace occupied the second floor above a closed furniture warehouse in Queens.

There was no sign except a brass ace fixed beside a steel door.

Two men stood outside.

Both straightened when Dante approached.

Neither smiled.

"Mr. Moretti."

"Open it."

The taller man hesitated.

"Mr. Romano isn't expecting you."

Dante did not slow down.

"That sounds like his problem."

The door opened.

Sophia followed Dante up a narrow staircase that smelled of cigar smoke and bleach.

At the top, another man reached toward her.

Enzo caught his wrist before he touched her.

"Bad idea."

The man slowly lowered his hand.

Sophia wished her heart would stop pounding loudly enough for everyone to hear.

Dante glanced back once.

She lifted her chin.

He continued walking.

The main room was quieter than Sophia expected.

Green felt tables sat beneath low lamps.

Several men looked up from cards and immediately looked back down.

At the far end of the room, Anthony Rossi sat in a leather chair with a glass in front of him.

Sophia's anger hit before relief.

"Dad."

Anthony looked up.

His face drained of color.

"Sophia?"

She crossed the room.

"What are you doing here?"

Anthony stood too quickly and nearly knocked over the glass.

"You shouldn't have come."

"You called me and told me not to go home."

"I panicked."

"Why were you with Vanessa Genovese?"

Anthony looked toward Dante.

That single glance told Sophia he knew exactly who Dante was.

"She offered to help."

Sophia laughed once in disbelief.

"Help with what?"

Anthony's eyes dropped.

Dante stepped closer.

"The debt I purchased was settled."

Anthony swallowed.

"That debt was."

Sophia went cold.

"Dad."

He would not look at her.

"How much?"

"Sophia, please."

"How much?"

Anthony rubbed both hands over his face.

"Twenty-five."

She stared.

"Twenty-five hundred?"

He said nothing.

Her throat closed.

"Twenty-five thousand?"

Anthony nodded.

Sophia stepped backward as if he had hit her.

Sixteen days.

It had taken him sixteen days to borrow another twenty-five thousand dollars.

"From who?"

Anthony looked toward the rear office.

A door opened.

Vincent Romano emerged wearing a navy suit and a patient smile.

He was older than Sophia expected, perhaps fifty-five, with silver at his temples and the soft hands of a man who had other people do unpleasant work for him.

"From me," he said.

Dante's expression went flat.

"I told you Anthony Rossi receives no credit."

Vincent spread his hands.

"And I obeyed."

Sophia pointed at her father.

"He just said he owes you twenty-five thousand dollars."

"Not him."

Vincent's smile widened.

"You."

The room seemed to tilt.

Sophia stared at him.

"I have never borrowed a dollar from you."

"No."

Vincent walked to a table and picked up a paper.

"But someone borrowed against your future earnings."

He handed the page to Dante.

Dante read it once.

Then again.

His face changed in a way Sophia had not seen before.

"This is forged."

Vincent shrugged.

"Perhaps."

Sophia grabbed the page.

Her name was printed at the top.

Sophia Teresa Rossi.

Her address was correct.

Her Social Security number was partially listed.

At the bottom sat a signature that looked almost exactly like hers.

Almost.

"I didn't sign this."

"I believe you," Vincent said.

"Then tear it up."

"I would love to."

His eyes moved toward Dante.

"But the loan was guaranteed by a Moretti account."

Dante looked up sharply.

"Which account?"

Vincent tapped the page.

"Your household operations account."

Enzo stepped forward.

"That is impossible."

Vincent smiled at him.

"Numbers are rarely impossible."

Sophia looked between them.

"Someone used Dante's money to guarantee a fake loan in my name?"

"That appears to be the trick," Vincent said.

"And my father?"

Anthony began shaking his head.

"I thought it was real, Soph."

"How could you think I borrowed money from these people?"

"Vanessa said you had arranged it."

The room went silent.

Dante's voice became almost gentle.

"Where is Vanessa now?"

Anthony looked toward the rear exit.

"She left before you got here."

Enzo was already on his phone.

Sophia looked at her father.

"Why would Vanessa tell you I borrowed money?"

Anthony's face folded with shame.

"She said you were going to marry into money eventually."

Sophia stopped breathing.

Dante went still beside her.

"She said what?"

Anthony looked miserable.

"She said everybody in the Moretti house could see what was happening."

Sophia's cheeks burned.

"Nothing is happening."

"I know."

"Do you?"

"I was desperate."

"You are always desperate after you make another stupid decision."

Anthony flinched.

Sophia did not care.

Sixteen days earlier, she had agreed to work three months to free him from forty thousand dollars.

Now he had stepped into another trap because someone waved money in front of him.

"You sold my name."

"No."

"You signed something."

Anthony's silence answered her.

Sophia's eyes filled, but she refused to cry in that room.

"What did you sign?"

"A witness statement."

Dante's attention sharpened.

"Saying what?"

Anthony looked at Sophia.

"That you asked me to collect the money for you."

Sophia closed her eyes.

For a moment, she could hear only the faint clicking of poker chips from another table.

"Dad, why?"

"She promised nobody would get hurt."

Sophia opened her eyes.

"You believed a woman you met today over your own daughter?"

Anthony's face crumpled.

"I believed the money."

That answer hurt because it was honest.

Dante took the forged agreement from Sophia.

"Vincent, this debt does not exist."

Vincent's smile faded.

"Then explain why twenty-five thousand dollars moved from a Moretti account into mine this morning."

Dante looked at Enzo.

Enzo's face had become tense.

"Boss, I need five minutes."

"Take two."

Enzo walked away with his phone.

Sophia stared at Dante.

"Did Vanessa have access to that account?"

He did not answer quickly enough.

"Dante."

"She has access to some household accounts because of the wedding."

Sophia laughed bitterly.

"So your fiancee used your money to manufacture my debt."

"If that is what happened."

"If?"

"I do not accuse people without proof."

Sophia looked at the forged signature.

"You had no problem investigating me without proof."

The words landed hard.

Dante accepted them without defending himself.

Vincent sat at the table and folded his hands.

"This family discussion is touching, but someone owes me twenty-five thousand dollars."

Dante turned toward him.

"You were already paid."

"I was paid principal."

"There is no principal on a forged note."

Vincent's smile returned.

"Then perhaps the police should decide."

Sophia felt fear crawl up her spine.

Dante's face became colder.

"You don't call police."

"Neither do you."

"Try me."

For the first time, Vincent stopped smiling.

Enzo returned.

"The transfer is real."

Dante's jaw flexed.

"Authorization?"

Enzo hesitated.

"Your code."

The room seemed to lose all sound.

Sophia stared at Dante.

"Your code?"

"I didn't authorize it."

"Can Vanessa use it?"

"No."

"Then who can?"

Dante looked at Enzo.

Enzo looked back at him.

Neither man answered.

Sophia understood before they said anything.

Someone inside Dante's inner circle had helped Vanessa.

And whoever it was knew enough to forge Sophia's signature, access her personal information, move Moretti money, and send her father into the Lucky Ace.

Dante turned toward Anthony.

"You are leaving with us."

Vincent stood.

"Not so fast."

Dante looked at him.

The temperature in the room seemed to fall.

Vincent lifted both hands.

"I only need one thing first."

He pulled a small recorder from his pocket and pressed play.

Vanessa's voice filled the room.

"Say it clearly, Mr. Rossi."

Then Anthony's voice answered.

"Sophia told me Dante Moretti would take care of everything."

Sophia turned toward her father in horror.

The recording continued.

"She said once she had Dante, none of us would ever worry about money again."

Sophia stopped breathing.

Anthony began to speak.

"Soph, I can explain."

Then Vanessa's recorded voice asked one final question.

"And what did Sophia say about the engagement?"

Anthony's voice came through the speaker again.

"She said Vanessa Genovese wouldn't be a problem much longer."

Dante's eyes moved slowly toward Sophia.

For the first time since he had met her, there was doubt in them.

May you like

And Sophia realized Vanessa had not brought her father to the club to collect a debt.

She had brought him there to manufacture a motive.
