Chapter 16 - The Bride, the Waitress, and the Altar

At six thirty on Saturday morning, St. Augustine's Church looked peaceful.

That was the cruelest part.

Snow rested along the stone steps.

Florists carried white roses through the front doors.

A string quartet rehearsed in the choir loft.

Catering vans arrived behind the parish hall.

Nothing about the scene suggested an elderly woman was being held somewhere on the property.

Nothing suggested two crime families were preparing to trade decades of evidence beneath an altar.

Nothing suggested the bride had agreed to testify against her own father before the vows were even spoken.

Sophia watched the church from an unmarked vehicle across the street.

She wore a dark navy dress Elena had chosen for her days earlier.

It felt strange to be dressed for a wedding she desperately hoped would not happen.

Enzo sat in front beside a federal investigator named Mara Keene.

Keene was in her forties, practical, impatient, and unimpressed by the Moretti name.

Sophia liked her immediately.

"We have agents in the rectory kitchen, choir loft, parking area, and school building," Keene said.

Dante looked at the church.

"Carlo's people will notice."

"Then your people need to keep them looking elsewhere."

Enzo nodded.

"Already arranged."

Sophia looked at Keene.

"Why are you trusting the ledgers?"

"I'm not."

Keene turned toward her.

"I am verifying them."

"The signatures, bank records, and Maria Rossi affidavit are enough for warrants if the originals authenticate."

"But today is about Elena Moretti."

Sophia respected the distinction.

Dante did too.

"No arrests until my mother is physically safe."

Keene gave him a flat look.

"You do not command federal agents."

Dante held her gaze.

"Then consider it a request from a concerned taxpayer."

Keene stared at him.

Sophia looked out the window to hide a smile.

At seven fifteen, the medical transport van was searched.

Empty.

There were traces showing someone had been inside recently.

A wool fiber matched Elena's coat.

No Elena.

At eight, Vanessa arrived through the side entrance with two bridesmaids who believed they were attending an ordinary rushed wedding.

Her father arrived fifteen minutes later.

Carlo wore a black overcoat and the relaxed expression of a man who thought the building belonged to him.

Paul Mercer walked beside him.

Sophia's pulse quickened when she saw the lawyer.

Mercer looked ordinary.

That offended her.

She had expected a face that announced cruelty.

Instead, he looked like somebody who might help a neighbor carry groceries.

Vanessa's voice came through a concealed microphone.

"Good morning, Father."

Carlo kissed her cheek.

"You look beautiful."

"Thank you."

"Nervous?"

"Should I be?"

Carlo laughed.

"Every bride should be a little nervous."

Vanessa did not answer.

Sophia imagined what it cost her to stand there.

At eight twenty-three, Dante entered through the front doors.

His tuxedo was black.

His face was unreadable.

Reporters had gathered behind barricades outside because Carlo wanted the wedding public.

He believed public attention would force Dante to complete it.

He still thought reputation was stronger than choice.

Sophia understood why Maria had frightened him.

Maria believed paper could outlive fear.

At nine, Enzo received a message from a security officer inside the rectory.

A locked basement door had been discovered behind the boiler room.

Keene looked at Dante.

"We can breach it."

"Wait."

Sophia turned.

"Why?"

Dante pointed toward Mercer on the surveillance monitor.

The lawyer had begun checking his phone repeatedly.

"If the basement alarm is monitored, he moves Elena."

Keene nodded reluctantly.

"We need the access code."

Sophia stared at the screen.

Vanessa could not leave the bridal room without raising suspicion.

Carlo would not help.

Mercer might know.

Then Father Dominic appeared in the surveillance feed carrying a tray of coffee toward the rectory.

Sophia sat forward.

"He knows the building."

Enzo called him.

The priest answered quietly through an earpiece.

"The old boiler room had a coal passage," he whispered.

"Sealed in the nineties."

"Where does it open?"

"Behind the cemetery wall."

Keene dispatched two agents immediately.

At nine forty, they found the passage.

At nine fifty-two, they found a chair, an empty tea cup, and one of Elena's earrings.

But Elena was gone.

Sophia felt panic rise.

"They moved her."

Dante stared at the earring on the monitor.

"When?"

Keene listened to her radio.

"Footprints lead toward the church basement."

Father Dominic looked alarmed.

"There is another stair beneath the sacristy."

Sophia understood.

The vault.

Carlo had moved Elena close to Maria's hidden ledger because he wanted every piece in one place.

At ten thirty, wedding guests began arriving.

Politicians.

Executives.

Relatives.

Society reporters.

People who had no idea the ceremony was surrounded by investigators.

Sophia entered through a side door with the decoy metal box.

The original black ledger remained secured with Keene.

The red Moretti ledger had been copied and placed in a evidence vault off site.

Sophia carried pages that looked convincing enough to fool anyone from several feet away.

Dante met her near the sacristy.

For a moment, neither spoke.

The kiss on the terrace existed between them like a secret with its own pulse.

"You should not be carrying the box," he said.

Sophia almost smiled.

"Good morning to you too."

"I mean it."

"Carlo asked for me."

"He asked for the box."

"He asked me to bring it."

Dante's face tightened.

"I don't like it."

"I have gathered that you dislike situations you cannot control."

"This one particularly."

Sophia looked at him.

"You promised you would not say yes."

"I remember."

"Even if he threatens Elena."

His eyes changed.

Sophia understood the answer was no longer simple.

"Dante."

"I will get my mother out."

"That was not what I asked."

He stepped closer.

"If I am forced to choose between a false vow and my mother's life -"

Sophia's chest tightened.

"You choose her."

Dante did not speak.

"Of course you choose her."

Sophia hated that the words hurt.

"Just do not pretend afterward that it was anything else."

She walked toward the nave before he could answer.

At ten fifty-five, the organ began.

Guests stood.

Vanessa appeared at the back of the church on Carlo's arm.

She wore a simple white gown without a veil.

Sophia had expected her to look triumphant.

She looked terrified.

Carlo smiled at the guests as they walked down the aisle.

Vanessa's eyes found Sophia near the side pew.

Sophia gave the smallest nod.

Vanessa breathed in.

Then she kept walking.

Dante stood at the altar.

His gaze moved past Vanessa and found Sophia.

Carlo noticed.

His smile tightened.

The ceremony began.

Father Dominic spoke about commitment, honesty, and the freedom required for a valid marriage.

Sophia wondered whether he had chosen the words deliberately.

Carlo shifted in his seat.

Mercer stood near the rear aisle.

Enzo remained two rows behind him.

Federal agents blended among guests.

The metal box sat beneath Sophia's chair.

At the moment Father Dominic asked whether anyone knew of a reason the marriage should not proceed, nobody spoke.

Then Carlo's phone vibrated.

He read the message.

His face changed.

Sophia knew immediately that something had gone wrong.

Mercer looked toward him.

Carlo made a tiny gesture.

Mercer left through the side door.

Enzo followed several seconds later.

Father Dominic continued.

Vanessa turned toward Dante.

Her hands trembled.

"Dante Moretti, do you take Vanessa Genovese -"

A scream sounded faintly beneath the church floor.

Dante went still.

Sophia recognized the voice.

Elena.

Guests murmured.

Carlo stood.

"Continue."

Father Dominic stared at him.

"Sit down, Mr. Genovese."

Carlo reached inside his jacket.

Several agents shifted instantly.

He did not pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a phone.

On the screen was a live video feed.

Elena sat in the church vault below them.

A man stood behind her.

Sophia did not recognize him.

A cord was wrapped around the handle of the vault door.

Carlo held up the phone so Dante could see.

"Say yes."

The entire church froze.

Vanessa turned toward her father.

"What are you doing?"

Carlo ignored her.

"Dante."

"One word."

"Then Elena walks out."

Dante stared at the screen.

Sophia felt every eye in the church moving between him and Vanessa.

Father Dominic looked furious.

"This ceremony is over."

Carlo's voice sharpened.

"No."

"It is not."

Vanessa suddenly stepped away from Dante.

"Yes, it is."

Carlo looked at his daughter.

"Get back there."

Vanessa's face went white.

But she did not move.

"No."

The word echoed through the church.

Sophia remembered thinking nobody had said that word to Dante in a long time when she first refused his SUV.

Now Vanessa was saying it to the man who had controlled her entire life.

Carlo stared at her as though she had spoken a foreign language.

"Vanessa."

"No."

Her voice grew stronger.

"You locked my mother in a house."

Guests began whispering.

Carlo's face twisted.

"Be quiet."

"You threatened me."

"You used me to frame Sophia."

"I helped you because I was afraid of you."

Vanessa turned toward the guests.

"And I am done being afraid."

Carlo's composure cracked.

"You stupid girl."

Dante stepped between him and Vanessa.

"Do not speak to her like that."

Carlo laughed.

"Now you defend both of them?"

Dante's voice stayed low.

"I defend people in my house, my church, and my family from men who mistake fear for loyalty."

Sophia's heart pounded.

Carlo raised the phone again.

"Then watch your mother."

The man behind Elena reached for the vault door.

Dante's face changed.

Sophia grabbed the decoy box and stepped into the aisle.

"Stop."

Everyone turned toward her.

Carlo smiled slowly.

"There she is."

Sophia walked toward the front.

"You want Maria's box."

"Yes."

"And the ledger."

"Yes."

"Let Elena come upstairs."

Carlo laughed.

"You are in no position to negotiate."

Sophia set the box on the floor.

"Then you do not get this."

Carlo's eyes narrowed.

"You think I won't take it?"

"I think half the people in this church have cameras pointed at you."

Sophia looked around.

Guests had begun holding up phones.

"You wanted a public wedding."

"Now you have a public negotiation."

Carlo's face darkened.

Dante looked at Sophia with something like astonishment.

Carlo spoke into his phone.

"Bring Elena up."

Sophia exhaled.

A side door opened two minutes later.

Elena appeared with the unknown man beside her.

Her hands were free.

She looked furious rather than frightened.

"If anybody ever serves me tea in a basement again," she announced, "I will haunt every one of you before I am even dead."

A strange ripple of nervous laughter moved through the church.

Sophia almost cried with relief.

Dante stepped toward his mother.

Carlo raised one hand.

"Not yet."

"The box first."

Sophia looked at Elena.

Elena saw the box.

Then she looked at Sophia.

Sophia gave the smallest shake of her head.

Decoy.

Elena understood.

Carlo did not.

Sophia pushed the box across the stone floor.

It stopped near his shoes.

Carlo opened it.

He saw copied ledgers and old photographs.

His shoulders relaxed.

That was when Mara Keene stood from the third pew.

"Carlo Genovese."

His face snapped toward her.

She displayed federal credentials.

"Step away from the box."

The church erupted in whispers.

Carlo stared at Dante.

"You brought federal agents into this?"

Dante looked at Maria's daughter.

"I learned from better people."

Carlo's face twisted.

Then the lights went out.

The church plunged into darkness.

Someone screamed.

Sophia heard glass break near the side aisle.

Dante shouted her name.

A hand grabbed Sophia's arm.

She fought instinctively.

A voice hissed near her ear.

"Move and Elena goes back downstairs."

Paul Mercer.

Sophia stopped.

Emergency lights flickered on.

Mercer had one arm around her shoulders and the real brass key from Father Luca pressed visibly between his fingers.

Enzo stood twenty feet away, furious.

Dante turned from Elena and saw Sophia.

His face went still.

Mercer smiled.

"Everybody keeps watching Carlo."

He looked toward the open side door.

Carlo was gone.

May you like

"That was always the mistake."

Then Mercer dragged Sophia through the sacristy door while the church exploded into chaos behind them.
