CHAPTER 14 — ISABELLA’S FINAL VISIT

Khloe was upstairs with Ava when the security alarm failed.
Marcus was in the kitchen.
He heard the soft click of the back door and turned.
Isabella stood inside wearing a black coat and no makeup.
She looked nothing like the polished woman from the gala.
She looked terrified.
Marcus moved between her and the staircase.
“You need to leave.”
“I didn’t come to hurt anyone.”
“You nearly killed my wife.”
“I know.”
“Police are searching for you.”
“My escort was working for Richard.”
Marcus did not lower his guard.
“Why are you here?”
Isabella removed a small recording device from her coat.
“Richard has one more account. He kept money for judges, police officers, and private security. If he is convicted without this, the network survives.”
“Why bring it to Khloe?”
“Because she is the only person he could never buy.”
Khloe appeared at the top of the stairs.
“You should be in court.”
Isabella looked up at her.
“I was wrong about everything.”
“You knew exactly what you were doing when you attacked me.”
“Yes.”
Isabella did not ask for forgiveness.
She placed the recorder on the floor and stepped away.
“I thought Marcus’s attention meant I had won. I thought his father’s money meant I was untouchable. I told myself you were standing between me and the life I deserved.”
Khloe descended one step at a time.
“You attacked a child who had not been born.”
Isabella’s eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
“Then nothing you say will make you innocent.”
“I’m not trying to be innocent.”
Police sirens approached the house.
Isabella raised her hands before the officers entered.
The recorder contained Richard’s private instructions, names of corrupt officials, and proof that he had continued issuing orders from jail.
At trial, Isabella testified against him.
She also confessed in full.
No excuses.
No performance.
No claim that Khloe provoked her.
Richard’s attorneys attempted to destroy every witness.
They failed.
Elaine played the original recording.
Samuel produced the trust documents.
Marcus admitted his emotional betrayal in open court.
Vivian described the conspiracy.
Khloe testified last.
She told the jury how it felt to curl around her unborn child while Isabella stood above her.
Richard was convicted on every major count.
As officers approached to take him away, he looked at Marcus.
“She will never trust you again.”
Marcus answered calmly.
“That is the price of what I did. Not a reason to blame her.”
Richard was led from the courtroom.
The reporters believed the story was over.

But outside, Khloe handed Marcus a sealed envelope.
Inside were finalized separation papers.
“I’m leaving the company,” Marcus said.
Khloe shook her head.
“That is not what these papers say.”
Marcus read the final page.
The separation had not been converted into a divorce.
Instead, Khloe had added one handwritten condition.
One year. No lies. No secret meetings. No promises without actions. Then I decide whether our marriage survives.
Marcus looked up.
May you like
Khloe was already walking away.
For the first time, the future of their marriage depended entirely on what he did next.
