CHAPTER 12 — THE SIGNATURE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The documents showed that Daniel Cole had authorized several offshore accounts later used by Richard.
If authentic, Khloe’s father had not been exposing the fraud.
He had helped create it.
Richard smiled as Marcus examined the pages.
“Your wife’s family built the machine,” he said. “I only learned how to use it.”
Marcus took photographs before police arrived.

Richard was arrested for conspiracy, obstruction, financial fraud, and attempted destruction of evidence.
But the documents created a new crisis.
Khloe refused to hide them.
“If my father was involved, the investigation must include him.”
Adrian disagreed.
“Those signatures could be forged.”
“Then we prove it.”
A forensic examiner studied the paper, ink, and handwriting.
The signatures were real.
Khloe felt as though she had lost her father a second time.
For days, she barely spoke.
Marcus visited only when invited.
He helped care for Ava, attended therapy, and cooperated with investigators.
He never asked Khloe to forgive him.
The silence between them slowly became less hostile, but trust remained distant.
Then Elaine noticed something in the financial documents.
Daniel’s signatures were genuine, but the authorization pages had been attached to contracts he had never signed.
The page numbers did not match.
The paper came from two different years.
Richard had taken Daniel’s signatures from legitimate rescue loans and attached them to fraudulent account agreements.
The forgery was sophisticated enough to deceive almost everyone.
Almost.
A retired notary confirmed Daniel had signed the original documents in her office.
She still possessed the archived copies.
Those copies proved Richard’s deception.
But they also revealed one final agreement.
Daniel Cole had demanded that Richard step down within five years of receiving the rescue money.
Richard agreed.
He simply never honored it.
Vivian helped him hide the agreement.
Marcus confronted his mother in jail.
“You knew my entire career was built on a lie.”
Vivian began to cry.
“I wanted you to have the life Richard promised.”
“He promised me a prison sentence.”
“I thought we could fix it before you discovered the truth.”
Marcus stood to leave.
Vivian called after him.
“There is one thing Isabella has not told Khloe.”
Marcus stopped.
Vivian lowered her voice.
“Richard convinced Isabella that Ava was not your child.”
“How?”
“He showed her a prenatal paternity report.”
“No test was ever performed.”
Vivian looked at him.
May you like
“One was.”
And the result was still sealed inside Richard’s private safe.
