Chapter 9: The Dragnet

The heavy boots of the police officers echoed sharply against the parquet floor, cutting through the stunned silence of the ballroom like a drumbeat of absolute authority.

High-society patrons scattered backward, pressing themselves against the velvet-draped walls and marble pillars to clear a wide path down the center of the room.

Arthur Vance stood frozen beside the VIP table, his hand still hovering inches from his champagne glass, his eyes darting frantically toward the ballroom exits only to find them already blocked by uniformed security personnel.

"Arthur Vance," the lead federal investigator announced, stepping forward with a leather folder opened to display an official federal warrant. "You are being placed under arrest for industrial espionage, corporate extortion, and conspiracy to commit fraud."

"This is an outrage!" Arthur shouted, his voice cracking with rising panic as he threw his napkin onto the table. "I am a founding board member of this foundation! You have no jurisdiction to—"

"We have full jurisdiction under the National Critical Infrastructure and Cyber Security Act," the investigator interrupted coldly, nodding to the officers flanking him. "Every wire transfer routed through your shell companies tonight has already been mapped and seized."

Two officers stepped forward, grabbing Arthur firmly by the arms and forcing his hands behind his back as they snapped heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

Julian Vance, sitting pale and trembling at the adjacent seat, slowly reached for his phone on the table, hoping to slide it into his pocket unnoticed.

"Don't even think about it, Julian," Victor Vance said, stepping out from behind the officers, his eyes cold and devoid of any familial warmth. "Your terminal access privileges were revoked the moment the firewall bounced your IP address back to your personal estate."

Julian froze, his hand trembling as a pair of officers smoothly bypassed Arthur to slap cuffs on his wrists as well.

The glittering crowd erupted into a chaotic storm of anxious whispers, gasps, and frantic smartphone recordings as the city's most elite charity gala transformed into a high-profile criminal sting operation in real time.

Marcus watched the arrests with an expression of cold, unyielding satisfaction, his fingers brushing the silver drive resting on the table.

"You think this stops with us?" Arthur snarled, straining against the officers as they dragged him backward toward the exit. "Isabella talked! The board knows about your family's secret acquisitions, Marcus! You haven't won anything!"

"Isabella is currently cooperating with federal prosecutors in a holding cell on the twentieth floor," Marcus replied quietly, his voice carrying clearly across the silent room. "Which means your little conspiracy just lost its last piece of leverage."

Arthur’s face twisted in fury and sheer disbelief, his protests swallowed up by the noise of the officers escorting him and Julian out through the heavy mahogany doors.

As the last of the police contingent cleared the room, the ballroom remained trapped in an eerie, suspended stillness.

Marcus turned on his heel, ignoring the staring crowd of panicked socialites, and strode briskly toward the private service elevator.

He pressed the call button with a heavy thumb, his mind racing back to the twentieth floor, back to the private suite where Khloe was waiting.

The elevator doors slid open instantly, revealing a pristine, mirrored interior.

Marcus stepped inside, pressed the button for the twentieth floor, and watched the doors close, cutting off the view of the chaotic ballroom below.

He didn't know it yet, but while he had been downstairs dismantling Arthur's network, a quiet, uninvited visitor had just unlocked the door to Khloe's suite from the inside.
