Chapter 15: The Unseen Shadow

The silence in the nineteenth-floor executive office was absolute, broken only by the distant wail of a police siren echoing up from the rain-slicked streets far below.
Khloe stood motionless by the open vault, the yellowed legal papers clutched tightly in her hand, her mind racing through a maze of betrayal, corporate warfare, and hidden family history that spanned decades.
Marcus stood beside her, his arm protectively wrapped around her shoulders, his gaze fixed on the open doorway where Isabella had just been dragged away.
"We need to leave," Marcus said softly, his voice low and resolute. "We secure the vault, lock the floor, and take these documents straight to federal headquarters."
"We can't," Victor said, his voice trembling as he stared at his phone, which had just lit up with a flashing, unauthorized emergency override alert.
Marcus frowned. "What are you talking about?"
Victor turned the phone around to show them the screen.
The hospital’s master network wasn't being controlled from the nineteenth floor anymore.
It wasn't even being controlled from an external server in the city.
The display showed a single, active terminal connection originating from a private suite on the top floor—a suite that was supposed to be completely empty.
Suite 2001.
Khloe’s former private maternity suite.
"Someone else is still up there," Khloe whispered, a cold shiver running down her spine. "Someone who hasn't been caught yet."
Marcus’s eyes darkened into a lethal, dangerous glare.
He looked down at Khloe, then toward the open elevator doors at the end of the dark corridor.
"Stay here with Victor," Marcus ordered quietly, his hand sliding into his jacket pocket to grip a heavy brass paperweight he had lifted from the desk.
"Marcus, no," Khloe pleaded, catching his arm. "It's a trap. It's all a trap."
"I know," Marcus replied, leaning down to press a fierce, lingering kiss to her forehead. "That's why I'm going to spring it."
He turned on his heel and walked swiftly down the hallway toward the elevator, the doors sliding open to swallow him into the shadows as he ascended back toward the top floor.

In the empty executive office, Khloe and Victor stood in the dim moonlight, listening to the faint, distant ding of the elevator chime echoing through the silent, sleeping hospital.
And high above them, in the dark stillness of Suite 2001, a figure stood by the window, looking down at the flashing red lights of the police cars surrounding the building—waiting for the final piece of the puzzle to fall into place.
