Chapter 8: The Return of the Lion

The service doors at the back of the grand ballroom swung open with a muffled hiss, admitting a single figure draped in the sharp, uncompromising lines of a black tuxedo jacket with loosened collar buttons.

Marcus strode into the ballroom, his footsteps soundless against the heavy Persian rugs, his dark eyes sweeping over the crowded room with the terrifying focus of a apex predator entering a feeding ground.

Several high-society patrons turned to look at him, murmuring softly among themselves at his sudden appearance and disheveled state—the slight tear in his jacket sleeve and the absence of his tie marking him out from the otherwise pristine crowd.

Marcus ignored them entirely.

His target was fixed straight ahead: the main auction stage where the auctioneer was calling for final bids on the encrypted tech endowment lot.

And sitting front and center at the VIP table, sipping champagne with an expression of serene arrogance, was Arthur Vance.

Marcus accelerated his pace, cutting diagonally across the polished parquet floor, parting the crowd of mingling socialites with a cold, intimidating aura that forced people to step aside instinctively.

Arthur looked up just as Marcus reached the edge of the VIP table, his champagne glass freezing halfway to his lips.

The smug confidence on Arthur’s face flickered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a sudden, sharp flash of unease.

"Marcus," Arthur said, forcing a tight, polite smile as he stood up to meet him. "We didn't expect you to leave your wife's bedside tonight. Is everything—"

"Cut the act, Arthur," Marcus interrupted, his voice cutting through the ambient chatter of the room like a physical blow. "The game is over."

The surrounding guests at neighboring tables instantly went silent, turning their heads to watch the unfolding confrontation between two of the city's most powerful business magnates.

Arthur’s smile vanished, his features hardening into a cold, defensive mask as he straightened his lapels.

"I have no idea what you're talking about, Marcus," Arthur replied smoothly, raising his voice just enough to project innocence to the surrounding onlookers. "If you're stressed about your wife's medical emergency, perhaps you should step outside and collect yourself."

On the stage, the auctioneer hesitated, lowering his gavel mid-swing as the tension at the VIP table drew the eyes of the entire room.

"My wife is fine," Marcus said, stepping closer until he was towering directly over Arthur, his dark eyes locked onto his cousin's nervous gaze. "And my security protocols have already wiped every malicious script your proxies attempted to upload from the nineteenth floor."

Arthur’s jaw tightened, the color draining slightly from his cheeks. "You're delusional. You're standing in the middle of a charity gala making wild accusations—"

"I'm not accusing you, Arthur," Marcus said, pulling a heavy, silver-cased encrypted flash drive from his pocket and slamming it down onto the starched white tablecloth with a sharp, echoing thud. "I'm arresting you."

Before Arthur could react, the grand double doors at the entrance of the ballroom flew open with a resounding bang.

A squad of armed municipal police officers, led directly by Victor Vance and two federal cyber-crime investigators, marched into the room in precise, disciplined formation.

The string quartet music stuttered and died out completely, leaving the massive ballroom wrapped in a breathless, suffocating silence.
