Chapter 16 - When the Whole Town Was Watching

The post spread quickly enough that Daniel began receiving calls from strangers.
Some offered support.
Others repeated Vanessa's claim that the family had suffered a terrible misunderstanding.
Rachel requested that the address be removed and documented the publication for authorities.
Her lawyer advised her to avoid arguing with commenters.
Hale reviewed potential threats individually instead of assuming every cruel sentence was a criminal act.
Rachel hated how much time protecting Emma now required.
The public argument never sounded like the private experience.
Every hour spent documenting a message was an hour she wished she could spend reading bedtime stories.
The preschool director offered a revised pickup protocol and limited access to Emma's information.
Rachel agreed and explained only what staff needed to know.
She did not want Emma's classmates learning the details of her injury from gossiping adults.
Vanessa appeared at a preliminary court proceeding with her attorney and did not enter a plea in Rachel's presence.
Reporters gathered outside.
Rachel declined interviews.
The case would be argued with evidence, not sound bites.
Online strangers debated motives while Emma practiced sleeping without the hall light on.
That night, Lily's father called to say his daughter was distressed by adults discussing the case within earshot.
Rachel asked him to tell Lily that none of the decisions belonged on her shoulders.
Mark thanked her.
A week later, Rachel received a handwritten letter from her father.
He admitted that he had heard his wife tell Vanessa to “teach Emma a lesson” before Rachel came downstairs.
He claimed he had not expected physical harm and apologized for refusing to help immediately afterward.
Rachel read the apology and felt no sudden forgiveness.
Rachel chose the smaller, harder work of making her home predictable again.
The admission made her furious because it revealed how many chances he had had to interrupt the morning.
She passed the letter to Hale.
When Daniel asked if she planned to answer, Rachel shook her head.
“An apology can be real,” she said.
“And still be nowhere near enough.”
The next day, her mother filed a sworn statement denying that she had directed Vanessa to confront Emma.
Her father's letter and her statement could not both accurately describe the conversation.
