Chapter 10 - The Chair Was Never the Reason

Emma's recovery advanced in small steps rather than miracles.

She began walking short distances with support and sleeping through longer stretches of the night.

Her doctor warned that healing after a serious injury could be uneven.

Rachel stopped measuring hope by whether each day looked better than the previous one.

She measured it by the moments Emma felt safe enough to laugh.

The trained interviewer met with Emma only when her doctors agreed she was ready.

There were good hours now, sometimes almost good days.

Rachel waited outside and resisted the urge to rehearse answers with her daughter.

When the interview ended, the specialist told Rachel that the child had been treated gently and that investigators would assess the account alongside other evidence.

No one offered an instant verdict.

Soon afterward, Hale shared that the investigation was no longer limited to whether the skillet slipped.

Several witness accounts and preserved messages suggested an adult confrontation had preceded the injury.

The specifics would be tested, not assumed.

Rachel remembered her mother's sentence about handling Emma before she came downstairs.

Rachel guarded them fiercely, refusing to let the investigation claim every moment of Emma’s childhood.

Perhaps the chair had only been an excuse.

Then Mark disclosed a troubling detail Lily had spontaneously told him days after breakfast.

According to Lily, Vanessa had been angry because Rachel planned to move Emma to a different preschool and no longer allow Grandma to supervise her alone.

Rachel had indeed told her mother that the previous week.

She had wanted firmer boundaries after Emma returned from a visit afraid of spilling juice.

Her mother had reacted as though Rachel were taking away property.

“This is about control,” Daniel said.

But whenever the phone rang, the old kitchen returned in a single pulse.

Rachel looked at him.

“It's about Emma being four years old and believing adults would protect her.”

The next morning, Hale arrived with a copy of a message extracted from a recovered device.

It had been sent from Vanessa to her mother shortly before breakfast.

“Is Rachel still upstairs?”

Her mother's reply was brief.
