Chapter 15 - The Night Before

Andrew met investigators rather than Rachel.
He described helping Robert reset the household camera after a software update the evening before the incident.
During the visit, Andrew heard an argument about Rachel's plans to limit unsupervised visits.
Robert had told his wife they needed to respect Rachel's decision.
According to Andrew, she replied that Rachel would “learn who runs this family.”
Andrew did not hear anyone discuss throwing an object or hurting Emma.
His account suggested planning around an upcoming confrontation, not a proven plan to cause the injury.
The idea that several adults had known there would be a confrontation made Rachel sick.
That distinction mattered.
Rachel refused to flatten every ugly fact into the most dramatic interpretation.
What frightened her was enough without embellishment.
Her mother had apparently anticipated a conflict and wanted control over what would be recorded.
Robert had later helped remove the camera.
When confronted with the evidence, Robert agreed to speak again with investigators.
He acknowledged that the camera had been deliberately disabled before breakfast at his wife's insistence.
He claimed he believed Vanessa intended only to scold Emma.
She kept replaying the fact that she had been upstairs cleaning a sweatshirt for a little girl she expected to see at breakfast.
His account left a bitter question unanswered.
After the crash, why had he carried Emma's cup to the sink instead of helping?
Robert said he froze.
Rachel thought about the silence and his careful movement toward the faucet.
She did not know whether freezing was the whole truth.
But she knew he had chosen to defend Vanessa on the phone afterward.
Meanwhile, Emma returned to a routine of therapy, quiet play, and short visits with friends.
One afternoon she lined up four toy chairs and placed her rabbit in the smallest.
Ordinary errands should not require a parent to fear what family members might do in the next room.
“No yelling,” she told the toys.
Rachel stepped into the hallway and cried where Emma could not see.
The following morning, Hale called.
Prosecutors had authorized criminal charges against Vanessa related to Emma's injuries.
Additional decisions about anyone else's conduct were still under review.
Rachel's relief lasted only seconds.
Vanessa had learned about the charges too.

And she had posted Rachel's address online.
