Chapter 12 - What the Camera Saw

Investigators did not play the recovered video for Rachel at the hospital.
They first ensured it was forensically preserved and reviewed by the appropriate professionals.
Her attorney later explained what they could responsibly disclose.
The clip showed Emma sitting at the breakfast table while Vanessa approached from the stove.
Lily was nearby.
Rachel's mother could be seen speaking from the doorway.
The recording contained limited audio, but the movement of the skillet appeared deliberate rather than a simple fall from the stovetop.
A full expert assessment and witness testimony would still matter.
Rachel had imagined video evidence would feel like relief.
Rachel felt both vindicated and sick.
She had spent days fearing there would never be an objective record.
Now the record existed, and it could not undo what Emma had endured.
Hale told her not to circulate the footage.
It showed a child at her most vulnerable and was evidence in an active case.
Rachel agreed immediately.
A few hours later, Vanessa was questioned again through counsel.
Her public story changed.
Instead, the knowledge that the moment had been recorded made the injury feel newly present.
She acknowledged losing her temper but insisted she had meant only to frighten Emma by striking the table.
The defense claimed the pan's trajectory was unintended.
Rachel did not know what a jury would eventually believe.
She knew that Vanessa's first response had been to blame the child.
She knew her mother had tried to silence her.
And she knew Emma had asked whether Grandma would be angry if she told.
At home, Rachel found a package on the doorstep.
Inside was Lily's favorite picture book and a note from Mark.
Daniel sat with her in silence until she could remember the room around her.
“Lily asked if Emma can have this until she feels better.”
Rachel placed it beside Emma's rabbit.
Kindness felt startling after so much calculation.
Then her lawyer called.
Prosecutors were preparing charges, and the family had submitted a new allegation.
They claimed Rachel had coached Emma to fabricate her account.
Rachel stood in the nursery holding the picture book.
The accusation was false.
