Chapter 17 - The Counterattack

Dean's voice on the recording did not settle whether he knew the route was unsafe.
It established that he had relayed the change.
I wanted the distinction preserved because truth was not a weapon to swing carelessly.
During a formal interview, Dean finally explained what he remembered.
A company supervisor had instructed him to use Dad's authorization credentials because the original approval chain was unavailable.
Dean claimed he believed the revised coordinates had been checked.
When the mission went wrong, the supervisor ordered him to keep quiet.
I asked through investigators whether Dean had told Judith.
He had.
Judith then used the forged authorization to convince Dad that exposure would destroy his daughter's career.
She helped him disappear, initially insisting it was temporary.
Afterward, she controlled correspondence, finances, and the account the family heard.
“She said Maya would never forgive us if she learned what happened,” Dean admitted.
He was wrong about that.
I might never forgive their deception.
But that was not the danger Judith feared most.
She feared losing the power she gained from it.
Naomi prepared a public response limited to verified facts: my father was alive, a guardianship review was pending, and the purported property transfer bearing my name was disputed.
My military record was not offered as an invitation to reveal protected mission details.
My command reviewed the full video and confirmed that the edited clip had omitted relevant context.
The complaint against me was closed without adverse finding.
I should have felt victorious.
Instead, I sat in my car and cried for the first time since the banquet.
Ethan stayed in the passenger seat and said nothing.
He understood the difference between relief and happiness.
Before sunset, Judith sent a message to every relative.
Maya is trying to have her own mother arrested.
I read it once and deleted the notification, preserving the evidence elsewhere.
Then a reporter called Naomi with a startling question.
“Is it true Judith Bennett is holding a second banquet tomorrow to set the record straight?”
My mother had chosen the same hall.

She believed she could perform her way out of reality one more time.
