Chapter 15 - The Original Map

For one terrible day, it seemed the truth would remain just out of reach.

The storage records were incomplete.

The original map had not been found among Dean's boxes.

Judith refused every voluntary request for an interview.

My superiors were reviewing the manipulated video, and reporters waited outside the hotel for a statement.

Dad's condition worsened from exhaustion after the court appearance.

He needed rest more than another interrogation.

I sat alone beside his bed as rain struck the window.

“I'm sorry,” he whispered.

“You've already said that.”

“I know.”

He touched my hand.

“I keep thinking the next apology will make the years smaller.”

“It won't,” I said.

“But I'm glad you're here to say it.”

Dad pointed toward a small leather-bound address book in his drawer.

“Blue house,” he murmured.

I turned the pages.

Among ordinary addresses was a note written in his careful block letters.

Judith's mother's house.

Underneath: floor safe, dining room, false bottom.

I remembered my grandmother's house near the coast.

After she died, Judith kept it empty and insisted no one had permission to enter.

Naomi immediately advised me not to trespass or retrieve anything myself.

We forwarded the information to investigators.

It took patience I barely possessed.

While we waited, Judith sent me a private recording.

Her voice was soothing, almost tender.

“I know you're upset, Maya.”

“Come to the house alone, and we'll work this out.”

Then she added a sentence that stripped away the performance.

“Your father doesn't have much time, and I can make sure you never see him again.”

I preserved the message.

For years, she had threatened to withhold love.

Now she threatened access to a living person.

The woman who insisted family meant loyalty had never learned that love could not be owned.

That evening, investigators contacted Naomi.

They had lawfully entered the coastal property.

Beneath a false panel in the dining-room safe lay the original Sentinel route map.

A handwritten annotation identified the person who authorized the change.

It was not Dean.

It was Daniel Bennett.
