Chapter 14 - The Witness Who Turned

The hearing began with Judith describing herself as a devoted wife.

Her attorney introduced medical records from the period immediately after Dad's stroke.

They documented genuine limitations.

But they did not settle the question of his present wishes or capacity.

Naomi asked that Dad's current independent evaluation be considered.

The judge agreed.

Judith's jaw tightened.

Then Dean took the witness stand.

I expected him to repeat the family's old story.

He began by describing my absence during Dad's supposed final illness.

“She chose her career over us,” he said.

Naomi asked a simple question.

“On what date did you last see Daniel Bennett alive?”

Dean glanced at my mother.

“Before the funeral.”

“Are you certain?”

“Yes.”

Naomi produced a security photograph obtained through the investigation.

It showed Dean escorting Dad into a commercial building nine months after the funeral.

Dean stared at the image.

The judge asked him to answer the question again.

He swallowed.

“I may have been mistaken.”

Naomi did not raise her voice.

“Mr. Bennett, was that your brother?”

“Yes.”

Judith made a sound of disbelief.

Dean turned toward her with sudden anger.

“You said we were saving Maya.”

The courtroom froze.

My mother stood so quickly her chair scraped the floor.

Her attorney urged her to sit.

Dean continued, now speaking directly to the judge.

“Judith told me that if Maya knew Daniel was alive, the people involved in Sentinel would come after her.”

He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.

“I helped move Daniel because I believed her.”

I wanted to hate him with the simplicity I had once hated myself.

But what I heard was a man admitting he had traded judgment for obedience.

The judge paused the hearing while the attorneys addressed the new testimony.

Outside the courtroom, Dean approached me.

“I wasn't the one who changed the map,” he said.

“Then who was?”

He looked over my shoulder toward the courthouse doors.
