Chapter 16 - What the Map Really Said

For a moment, the accusation against Dad felt worse than every lie told about him.

I had spent days rebuilding the idea that he was a victim.

Now the most important document appeared to place him at the center of the disaster.

Naomi told me to read the annotation carefully.

It did not say Dad had altered the evacuation route.

It said his name was used to authorize the revised file.

Beside the signature was a small mark I recognized.

A reversed numeral seven.

Dad never crossed his sevens that way.

He had taught me to write numbers clearly when I was seven years old, explaining that confused digits could cost lives on a map.

I told the investigator, who treated the observation as a lead rather than proof.

A qualified document examiner would have to compare the signature and handwriting.

The route file's timestamps offered another clue.

The authorization was entered during a period when Dad's verified travel records placed him aboard a commercial flight.

Someone had used his credentials.

The discovery changed the meaning of every event that followed.

He had been blackmailed, or frightened, or both, because the forged authorization made him appear responsible.

Judith knew enough to exploit it.

But she was not necessarily the person who created it.

Walter joined us for a recorded interview.

He recognized the numbering on the paper as a system used by an outside logistics contractor.

That contractor had employed Dean.

More surprisingly, it had also paid Judith for administrative services.

The payments began before Sentinel.

They continued after Dad vanished.

I remembered Judith mocking my deployments while attending fundraiser dinners hosted by the same company.

She had not merely benefited from the lie she told about me.

She had benefited from the machinery that kept Dad silent.

Near midnight, Ethan called with news about Finch's corrected testimony.

Finch remembered that the revised coordinates had been introduced as an emergency order from a civilian support channel.

The voice giving the order had not been Dad's.

The recording had survived in an archived communications file.

Ethan sent the reference to investigators.

When they played the authenticated audio for the review team, I heard a familiar instruction.

“Use the revised route and don't question it.”

The voice belonged to Dean.
