Chapter 2 - THE VIDEO THEY TRIED TO CUT

By sunrise, a polished thirty-second video was circulating among Savannah charity-board members.
The clip began with Emma reaching toward the jeweled egg.
It skipped the moment Margaret pulled her hair.
Then it showed my furious face and my mother announcing that discipline mattered.
Lauren had attached a message calling the incident an unfortunate family misunderstanding.
By breakfast, people who had not attended dinner were telling Jonathan to control his wife.
I played the clip once.
"They removed the fall," I said.
"They removed the truth."
Rachel arrived at our house with a forensic media specialist named Omar Bell.
We gave him the untouched rabbit-system download, the phone notification logs, and the original hospital records.
Omar checked timestamps and file integrity.
"The system retained more than they realize," he said.
The footage showed Margaret reaching across the table, Emma's chair tipping, and the sharp sound of her shoulder striking the floor.
It also showed Lauren holding my arm while my daughter cried.
I closed my eyes for one moment.
Then I opened them.
"Preserve it."
Rachel advised us not to publish a child's most painful moment online.
Instead, she would provide it to investigators and pursue preservation notices for the guests' recordings.
That afternoon a detective named Maya Torres called to schedule interviews.
Margaret called six minutes later.
"I understand you've been making accusations," she said.
"Emma has a fracture, Mother."
"Children fall."
"You pulled her off a chair by her hair."
"You must be confused."
I remembered hearing those words whenever she wanted me to doubt my own eyes.
"A camera wasn't confused."
Silence.
Then her voice hardened.
"You will destroy this family if you insist on humiliating me."
"You did that yourself."
I ended the call.
An hour later a courier delivered a sealed envelope from Caldwell & Price.
Inside was a proposed agreement requiring Jonathan and me to admit that Emma's injury had been accidental and refrain from criticizing Margaret.
In exchange, the family would generously agree not to pursue legal claims for defamation.
A handwritten note from Lauren sat on top.
"Sign this before the bank learns how unstable you've become."
Rachel studied the letterhead.
"They have made a mistake," she said.
"This document puts Charles directly inside the cover-up."
Then she showed me the last page.
My supposed signature was already there.
