Chapter 14 - LAURENS BARGAIN

Lauren agreed to meet Rachel and her own independent lawyer at a neutral office.

She arrived exhausted, her perfect hair pulled into a careless knot.

For the first time in my life, she looked less like the golden Whitmore daughter than a person who had run out of places to hide.

She admitted knowing about the redevelopment company and the questionable lien release.

She denied authorizing the office break-in.

She said Charles had promised that a private sale would protect Margaret's social standing and give Lauren a fresh start.

"You were going to use my money to fund that fresh start," I said.

She stared at her hands.

"I thought you would always pay."

There it was.

Not gratitude.

Expectation.

Rachel kept the meeting narrowly focused and made clear that any cooperation had to be truthful and independently verified.

Lauren asked whether I would support an arrangement sparing her public embarrassment.

"Emma doesn't get to erase her fracture," I replied.

"Neither do I."

She flinched.

"I didn't pull her hair."

"You held me back when I tried to reach her."

For a moment she looked as if she might argue.

Then she whispered, "I know."

She produced an email chain concerning the proposed sale, a draft trust schedule, and instructions from Charles to pressure me into signing a liability waiver.

What she did not produce was an apology to Emma.

I realized she still believed accountability was something that could be negotiated around the people who had suffered.

After the meeting Jonathan asked if I believed Lauren.

"Some of it," I said.

"Not all."

Rachel agreed.

The material needed independent corroboration.

That evening Detective Torres told us the contractor involved in the Oakridge break-in had been interviewed.

He admitted accessing the building but claimed he had been hired to retrieve records Charles believed belonged to the estate.

Investigators were checking that account against key-card logs and communications.

I felt no victory.

Only fatigue.

At bedtime Emma invited me into her blanket fort.

She placed Mr. Buttons between us.

"You can stay here," she said.

"Is it safe?"

She nodded gravely.

"I made the rules."

I kissed her forehead.

The next morning Rachel received a message from Charles's lawyer.

Charles now claimed the disputed trust documents were authorized by Margaret.

An affidavit bearing Margaret's signature had appeared.

It transferred responsibility for the entire scheme onto my mother.

And it was dated Easter morning.
