Chapter 12 - THE EGG ON THE PORCH

The police photographed the package before removing it.

A porch camera showed a delivery driver leaving it, but the shipping label used a false return address.

Emma never saw the card.

I would not allow another adult's cruelty to become part of her childhood vocabulary.

Rachel obtained a preservation request for the shipping records.

The sender had paid through an account associated with a Caldwell event-planning company.

That did not prove who wrote the message.

It did prove that the parcel had not arrived by accident.

Jonathan proposed hiring extra security for the house.

I agreed, though I hated that our four-year-old now lived inside the consequences of a fight she did not start.

Margaret requested a televised interview.

Her attorney advised against it.

She did it anyway.

Wearing pearls and sitting before the mansion's grand staircase, she described herself as a loving grandmother persecuted by an ambitious daughter.

"My family has always valued discipline," she said.

She called Emma sensitive and me vindictive.

The interviewer asked whether she had pulled the child's hair.

Margaret paused.

"I may have guided her away from a priceless object."

That sentence traveled farther than all her other claims.

The camera had captured much more than guidance.

Vivian withdrew from Margaret's charity committee after seeing the broadcast.

Two other guests contacted Detective Torres.

One had taken a photograph seconds after the fall.

The image showed Emma on the floor, one arm held awkwardly against her body.

Lauren stood over her, looking toward the guests rather than the child.

The second witness described Margaret saying that Caroline would return with a check once she stopped sulking.

I recognized the phrase.

She had used it when I was sixteen.

When I was twenty-three.

When I missed Lauren's anniversary dinner because I was giving birth.

Our family had a long tradition of calling pain a tantrum whenever it inconvenienced the person causing it.

That night Charles left a voicemail for Rachel.

He offered a global settlement including financial concessions, nondisparagement, and an end to the civil dispute.

Rachel asked him to put the proposal in writing.

The next morning she received a draft.

One provision would have required me to state that Emma had invented the assault.

I stared at that sentence until the letters blurred.

"No," I said.

Rachel closed the file.

"I thought so."

Then she showed me an exhibit Charles had attached by mistake.

It was an internal email from Lauren.
