Chapter 5: A New Birthday

Six months later, the house looked completely different.
The birthday balloons were gone.
So were the lies.
The court ruled that the forged property transfers were void.
Julián was convicted of assault and financial fraud.
Ofelia received a separate sentence for forgery and conspiracy.
Every document hidden inside the black trash bag became part of the official record.
Valeria moved back into the home her father had bought years before.
This time...
It truly belonged to her.
On her next birthday, there was no expensive party.
No forced smiles.
No audience.
Just a quiet dinner beneath the old jacaranda tree in the garden.
Ernesto placed a small wrapped box in front of his daughter.
Inside was the same steel watch he had removed before the investigation began.
Valeria smiled.
"You kept it?"
Ernesto nodded.
"I wanted you to remember the day everything changed."
She fastened the watch around her wrist.
"It reminds me of something else."
"What?"
She looked around the peaceful garden before answering.
"The day I stopped surviving..."
"And finally started living."

For the first time in years, everyone at the table smiled without pretending.
And this birthday became the first one that truly belonged to Valeria.
