Chapter 1: The Birthday Cake Became Evidence

The instant the investigators stepped into the dining room, every conversation died.
No one reached for another drink.
No one touched the birthday cake.
The forensic examiner quietly slipped on a pair of blue gloves while one investigator began recording the room with a body camera.
Julián finally found his voice.
"This is insane," he snapped. "You can't just walk into my house."
Ernesto calmly handed over a folded document.
"You invited me."
Julián frowned.
"What?"
"You invited me to my daughter's birthday."
He looked toward the investigators.
"They're here because your confession was voluntary... and witnessed."
The investigator nodded.
"We all heard you admit to striking your wife."
Julián's confidence cracked.
"It was a joke."
"No," Ernesto replied evenly.
"A joke doesn't leave fingerprints beneath foundation."
The forensic examiner approached Valeria.
"May I photograph the injuries?"
She hesitated.
For nearly a year she had asked permission before doing anything.
This time...
She looked only at her father.
Ernesto gave one quiet nod.
"You don't need anyone else's permission anymore."
Tears gathered in Valeria's eyes as she slowly brushed her hair away from her bruised cheek.
The camera flashed.
Then again.
And again.
Every bruise became another photograph.
Every photograph became another piece of truth.
Across the room, Ofelia quietly slid the black trash bag farther beneath the cabinet with the tip of her shoe.
She thought no one noticed.
She was wrong.
One investigator walked directly toward her.
"Ma'am..."
"Please step away from the cabinet."
May you like
For the first time all afternoon...
Ofelia looked afraid.
