Chapter 2: The Bag No One Wanted Opened

The investigator carefully pulled the black trash bag into the center of the kitchen.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
Inside were shredded bank envelopes...
Property records...
A forged power of attorney...
And several unsigned loan applications bearing Valeria's signature.
The investigator looked at Ernesto.
"You expected we'd find these."
"I knew she would try to hide them," Ernesto answered.
Valeria stared at the papers in disbelief.
"I never signed those."
"You didn't," Ernesto said.
"The signatures were traced."
Ofelia suddenly stepped forward.
"Those belong to me!"
The investigator calmly blocked her path.
"Please don't touch the evidence."
Julián slammed his fist against the granite island.
"This proves nothing!"
Ernesto slowly removed another envelope from his briefcase.
"I was hoping you'd say that."
Inside was a report from a handwriting expert.
Every forged signature matched one person.
Ofelia Salgado's eyes widened.
"No..."
The investigator read quietly.
"The signatures are consistent with samples provided by Ofelia Herrera."
Silence.
Then Valeria whispered something she had never dared say aloud.
"You were trying to steal my father's house."

Ofelia looked away.
She couldn't deny it.
