Chapter 4 — A Son Makes His Decision

The next morning, I returned to the house alone.

My mother sat calmly at the dining table, drinking coffee as if nothing had happened.

"I knew you'd come back."

"You've always chosen family."

I nodded.

"You're right."

Relief spread across her face.

Until I slid a folder across the table.

Inside were legal documents.

I had already arranged for Anna and me to move into our own home.

I had also transferred every automatic payment that supported my mother's household into a separate account managed by my attorney.

"I'll always make sure you're financially secure," I said.

"But you will never live under the same roof as my wife or my child again."

She laughed.

"You wouldn't abandon your own mother."

"I already abandoned the version of myself who allowed this to happen."

Her confidence collapsed.

For the first time, she realized she no longer controlled me.
