Chapter 2 — The Night Everything Changed

The kitchen remained perfectly still.

Only the faucet continued pouring icy water over Anna's trembling hands.

I looked at my mother without saying a word.

Then I reached past her, turned off the water, and gently wrapped a dry towel around my wife's frozen fingers.

Anna immediately broke down.

Not with loud sobs.

Just silent tears she had been holding back for months.

My mother scoffed.

"Oh, don't be so dramatic. I was simply teaching her how to be a proper wife."

I slowly stood up.

"No."

My voice was calm.

"You were abusing my wife."

Her smile disappeared.

"I am your mother."

"And she's carrying my child."

Without another word, I picked Anna up in my arms.

She instinctively wrapped one arm around my neck, too exhausted to protest.

As I walked toward the front door, my mother shouted behind us.

"If you leave this house tonight, don't ever come back!"

I stopped for only a second.

Without turning around, I answered,

"If protecting my family means leaving you behind... then I already made my choice."

The front door closed.

For the first time in months, Anna finally felt safe.
