Chapter 20 - Route Nine

The sun had not risen when they reached mile marker forty-two.
The sky had turned from black to the dark blue that comes just before morning.
Rain still fell in thin cold sheets.
The abandoned service station sat fifty yards off the highway behind a rusted chain-link fence.
Sadi had driven past it hundreds of times as a child.
Her father had always taken the next exit whenever possible.
Now she understood why.
Matteo's sedan was parked beside the collapsed fuel canopy.
Dorsey's backup car was not there.
Federal vehicles were still several minutes behind them.
Gabriel had refused to wait.
Mara had called him four different medical terms Sadi suspected were insults.
He had ignored all four.
Victor remained in the van under Mara's care.
Enzo came with Sadi and Gabriel.
The three of them stood outside the fence looking at the place where Rosa Moreno had died fourteen years earlier.
Sadi felt less grief than she expected.
The anger had burned too hot for too long.
What remained was focus.
Gabriel watched her.
"You do not have to go in."
Sadi looked at him.
"You really have learned nothing about me tonight."
"I had to try once."
Enzo cut the chain.
"You can argue after."
They crossed the cracked lot.
The service station building had no windows left.
Graffiti covered the walls.
A steel trapdoor was hidden beneath a rotted floor mat behind the old cashier counter.
Victor had given them the combination.
Gabriel entered it with his right hand.
The trapdoor unlocked.
A concrete staircase descended underground.
Sadi stared into the darkness.
"Another basement."
Enzo looked at her.
"You sound surprised."
"I am tired of your family's basements."
Gabriel almost smiled.
They descended.
The contingency vault was smaller than the archive but better preserved.
Emergency lights still worked.
A row of steel cabinets stood along one wall.
An old video terminal sat on a desk.
Matteo was beside it.
Kendricks sat on the floor with his hands bound.
The original covenant burned inside a metal trash bin.
Sadi ran toward it.
Matteo raised a gun.
"Stop."
She stopped.
The edge of the covenant had already blackened.
Gabriel stared at the flames.
"That will not save you."
Matteo smiled.
"No."
He pointed toward the cabinets.
"But this might."
A hard drive sat on the desk beside him.
Sadi recognized the G.F.H. logo.
"The crash recording."
Matteo nodded.
"The only copy with time code and original chain of custody."
Enzo raised his gun.
"Put yours down."
Matteo pressed his weapon against Kendricks's head.
"I do not think so."
Gabriel looked at the burning covenant.
"The trust vote is already suspended."
"Temporarily."
"The external archive is public now."
"Documents can be disputed."
"Mara recorded your confession."
"Thirty-two seconds recorded through a door."
Matteo smiled.
"My attorneys will call it edited."
Sadi looked at the hard drive.
"But you are afraid of that."
Matteo's eyes moved toward her.
"I am cautious."
"No."
Sadi stepped slightly to the side.
"You are terrified."
"Careful, Miss Moreno."
"There it is again."
Matteo frowned.
"The same word Dorsey uses when he has nothing left."
Enzo almost smiled.
Matteo's gun remained on Kendricks.
Sadi continued.
"If that recording only showed an accident, you would have destroyed it fourteen years ago."
"Perhaps I forgot."
"You do not forget anything."
Matteo's face tightened.
"You remembered my mother's name after fourteen years."
Sadi looked around the vault.
"You remembered this room."
She pointed at the hard drive.
"You came here before running."
Matteo said nothing.
"That recording does not just show the crash."
Gabriel understood.
"It has audio."
Matteo's expression changed.
Enzo looked at the terminal.
"Dash recorder."
Sadi's pulse jumped.
Victor had called it the original Route Nine recording.
Not traffic footage.
A vehicle recording.
The black utility truck had carried an internal security camera.
"It recorded the people inside the truck."
Matteo raised the gun toward Sadi.
"Enough."
Kendricks moved his head away from the barrel.
Matteo shoved it back.
Gabriel's voice became deadly calm.
"Do not point a gun at her."
Matteo looked at him.
"You sound like your father."
"You killed him too."
"Your father killed himself with weakness."
"You poisoned him."
"I corrected a succession problem."
Sadi saw Enzo's phone recording from his coat pocket.
Matteo did not.
Gabriel took one slow step forward.
"And me at seventeen?"
Matteo smiled.
"A test."
Sadi felt disgust rise.
"You experimented on a seventeen-year-old boy."
"I tested a compound on an heir who was never supposed to become one."
Gabriel's face did not move.
"Victor was supposed to inherit."
"Victor was supposed to obey."
"He stopped."
"Eventually."
Matteo looked at Sadi.
"Rosa made him question things."
Sadi froze.
"My mother knew Victor?"
"She treated him after he panicked the night of the crash."
Gabriel's eyes narrowed.
"He came back to the clinic."
"Covered in blood."
Matteo's voice carried contempt.
"Not hers."
"Carlo's."
Enzo understood.
"The truck windshield."
Matteo nodded.
"Victor wanted to confess."
Sadi stared.
"And Rosa stopped him?"
"No."
For the first time, something like irritation crossed Matteo's face.
"Rosa told him to tell the truth."
Gabriel looked toward the hard drive.
"That is why you killed her."
"I killed her because she had the Vascorin files."
The vault went silent.
Matteo had finally said it plainly.
Enzo's hidden phone captured every word.
Sadi kept him talking.
"Carlo drove the truck."
"Yes."
"Victor sat beside him."
"Yes."
"Did Victor know Carlo would hit my mother's car?"
Matteo hesitated.
The hesitation mattered.
"He knew we were stopping her."
"That is not what I asked."
Matteo's eyes hardened.
"He knew enough."
Sadi felt a bitter relief.
Victor had been complicit.
But Matteo had controlled the plan.
No more guessing.
No more half-truths.
"And my father?"
Matteo smiled.
"Tomas was harder to kill."
Sadi's body went cold.
"You killed him too."
Gabriel looked at her.
Enzo's face changed.
Matteo continued.
"Not personally."
"How?"
"Brake line."
Sadi stopped breathing.
Her father's death had been ruled a highway accident six years earlier.
A wet road.
A failed turn.
A car through a guardrail.
She had believed it because by then she was too tired of funerals to ask questions.
"Why?"
Matteo's voice was almost bored.
"He contacted a federal investigator."
Sadi gripped the edge of the desk.
Gabriel moved closer to her.
"Sadi."
She did not look at him.
"He spent eight years hiding evidence from you."
"Yes."
"And when he finally tried to expose it, you killed him."
"Yes."
The word settled inside her.
It did not break her.
It clarified everything.
Sadi looked at Enzo.
He gave the smallest nod.
The recording was still running.
Sadi kept her eyes on Matteo.
"Colin Weiss."
Matteo frowned.
"What about him?"
"He did exactly what you hired him to do."
"Victor hired him."
"And you killed him anyway."
Matteo's mouth tightened.
"He saw too much."
Sadi almost laughed at the phrase.
"SHE SAW EVERYTHING."
Gabriel looked at Matteo.
Sadi continued.
"You wrote that on his uniform."
Matteo said nothing.
"Why?"
His eyes moved toward her.
"Because Victor needed reminding that witnesses become liabilities."
The answer matched the pattern hidden in every other part of the night.
Sadi pressed harder.
"And I was the witness."
"You were supposed to be contained before Gabriel left Belladonna."
"But Enzo took me to the estate."
"Yes."
Matteo looked at Enzo with open contempt.
"He has always confused loyalty with improvisation."
Enzo smiled coldly.
"Improvisation worked tonight."
Matteo ignored him.
Sadi asked the question that had bothered her since Harker's last words.
"Why did Harker ask why I was working that night?"
Matteo's expression shifted.
"Because you were not supposed to recognize the old network."
"I did not."
"Your father trained you to notice details."
He glanced at the scars and bruises on her hands.
"We wanted to know how much of Tomas survived in you."
Sadi understood how completely they had reduced her life to an inheritance problem.
Her job had been a test.
Her reaction to Lucia had been a test.
Her self-defense had been a test.
Even her arrest had been designed to measure whether she knew where Tomas hid the covenant.
Matteo had mistaken ordinary love for predictable behavior.
Tomas had trained her because he loved her.
She protected Lucia because Lucia was frightened.
She stayed with Gabriel because he was bleeding.
None of those choices belonged to G.F.H.
That was the part Matteo had never understood.
"You planned everything except people making choices you did not authorize."
Matteo stared at her.
"That is why you lost."
Matteo finally noticed the phone in Enzo's pocket.
His face changed.
He fired.
Enzo dropped behind a cabinet.
The bullet struck the wall.
Gabriel lunged toward Kendricks.
Matteo fired again.
Sadi grabbed the metal trash bin and kicked it toward him.
Burning pages spilled across the floor.
Matteo jumped back.
Kendricks rolled away.
Gabriel pulled him behind the desk.
Enzo fired from cover.
Matteo disappeared behind a cabinet.
The vault filled with gunfire and smoke from the burning covenant.
Sadi crawled toward the hard drive.
A bullet struck the desk beside her hand.
She pulled back.
Matteo appeared at the end of the aisle.
His gun pointed directly at her.
Gabriel moved between them.
Matteo fired.
Gabriel twisted.
The bullet tore through his coat near his right side.
He went down.
"Gabriel."
Sadi ran toward him.
Matteo advanced.
Enzo fired and forced him back.
Gabriel pushed himself up.
"I'm fine."
Sadi looked at the torn coat.
No blood.
The bullet had grazed fabric.
"Stop doing that."
"Doing what?"
"Almost dying."
"Working on it."
Matteo moved toward the stairwell.
He still had the hard drive.
Sadi saw it beneath his coat.
She ran after him.
Gabriel shouted her name.
She ignored him.
Matteo reached the staircase.
Sadi caught his jacket.
He turned and struck her.
She hit the wall.
He grabbed her by the throat.
"Your mother should have taught you when to stop."
Sadi drove her heel into his knee.
His grip loosened.
She twisted beneath his arm the way Tomas had taught her.
Dropped her center.
Redirected his weight.
Matteo Falcone hit the concrete floor hard enough to lose the gun.
For one stunned second, the scene mirrored Belladonna.
Another powerful man on marble or concrete because he had grabbed Sadi Moreno and assumed size was enough.
Sadi kicked the gun down the stairs.
Matteo reached for her ankle.
Gabriel appeared behind him.
He raised his weapon.
Matteo froze.
"Do it," Matteo said.
Gabriel stared at his uncle.
"That is what you want?"
"You think prison will hold me?"
"Probably not forever."
Gabriel lowered the gun slightly.
"But a trial will force you to hear every name you tried to bury."
Matteo smiled.
"Weak like your father."
Gabriel's face did not change.
"No."
He looked at Sadi.
"Different from you."
Sirens grew louder above them.
Matteo suddenly reached inside his coat.
Sadi moved first.
She kicked his wrist against the concrete.
The hard drive fell out.
So did a small backup pistol.
Enzo reached them and kicked the weapon away.
Federal agents flooded the staircase seconds later.
Matteo looked at the badges.
For the first time that night, he looked old.
They cuffed him on the same concrete where Sadi had dropped him.
Kendricks was freed.
The burning covenant was extinguished.
Most of the signatures survived around the bullet hole and scorched edges.
Enzo handed an agent his phone.
"Full confession."
Sadi picked up the Route Nine hard drive.
Her hands shook only after everything stopped.
Gabriel stood beside her.
His left arm hung motionless.
His face was gray.
Mara's voice came from the top of the stairs.
"Gabriel."
He looked up.
"You have exactly zero minutes left."
Sadi turned toward him.
"Hospital."
He nodded.
No argument this time.
That frightened her more than all the arguments before.
As agents led Matteo past them, he looked at Sadi.
"You think this ends because I am in cuffs?"
Sadi held up the hard drive.
"No."
She looked toward Gabriel.
"It ends because the truth is finally leaving the basement."
Gabriel took one step toward the stairs.
Then his knees gave out.
Sadi caught him before he hit the floor.
Mara ran down.
The monitor clipped to Gabriel's belt began alarming.
May you like
His eyes found Sadi's once.
Then closed.
