Chapter 12 - The Two Living Keys

Sadi looked at the two biometric terminals and felt her father's plan close around her from fourteen years away.
"He made me part of the lock."
Gabriel read the labels beneath the scanners.
"Not intentionally."
"My blood is required."
"He probably expected Rosa to be alive when he designed it."
The thought hurt in a different way.
Victor walked toward the glass enclosure.
"Sentiment later."
Gabriel blocked him.
"You do not enter first."
Victor smiled.
"Still pretending this is your house?"
"You needed me to open the door."
"I needed a Falcone."
"Same problem."
Victor's men raised their weapons again.
Enzo moved slightly behind Sadi.
The archive ceiling was low.
The aisles between cabinets were narrow.
A gunfight here would kill the wrong people very quickly.
Sadi looked at the terminal.
"What happens if we do not use it?"
Victor answered.
"Matteo gets here eventually."
"How?"
"He has demolition equipment."
"Then why did he spend fourteen years looking for a key?"
Victor's mouth tightened.
Gabriel answered for him.
"Because the archive destroys itself if the door is breached."
Victor looked at him.
"You knew?"
"My grandfather liked dramatic engineering."
Sadi sighed.
"That appears genetic."
Gabriel almost smiled.
Victor did not.
Sadi approached the first terminal.
A screen lit up.
DESCENDANT AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.
A small lancet extended from the panel.
"That is unpleasant."
Gabriel looked at her.
"You threw a man onto marble tonight."
"He was more annoying than a needle."
She placed her finger against the sensor.
A quick sting followed.
The machine sampled one drop of blood.
The screen changed.
MORENO LINE CONFIRMED.
Victor inhaled sharply.
Sadi stared at the words.
Her mother had been turned into a password.
Gabriel moved to the second terminal.
Victor stepped beside him.
"Let me."
Gabriel looked at the black signet on Victor's hand.
"Tomas said your ring opens the wrong door."
"He was trying to keep me out."
"Working so far."
Gabriel pressed his right thumb against the scanner.
The terminal drew blood.
FALCONE LINE CONFIRMED.
A final prompt appeared on both screens.
DUAL CONSENT REQUIRED.
Sadi looked at Gabriel.
"Consent to what?"
He read the smaller text.
"Release of sealed medical, trust, and liability records."
Before Sadi touched the confirmation control, she looked beyond the glass enclosure.
A wall of narrow drawers filled the rear section of the archive.
Each drawer had two labels.
One was a date.
The other was a code.
G-17 appeared on one of them.
R-M appeared on another.
V-F appeared on three.
Sadi pointed.
"Those are people."
Victor's eyes moved toward the drawers.
"Some of them."
"What are the others?"
"Insurance policies."
Gabriel looked at him.
"Meaning blackmail."
Victor smiled without humor.
"Grandfather preferred the word continuity."
Sadi walked along the glass.
A lower drawer read ROUTE 9 - PRIMARY.
Her pulse jumped.
"That one."
Victor immediately stepped between her and the enclosure.
"Later."
Sadi looked at him.
"You have been waiting twelve years for later."
"And I can wait ten more minutes."
Gabriel noticed Victor's hand.
The black falcon ring had tightened against his finger.
Victor was nervous.
Gabriel looked toward the Route Nine drawer.
"What is in it?"
Victor did not answer.
Sadi stepped closer to the glass.
There was a second label beneath ROUTE 9 - PRIMARY.
VEHICLE CAPTURE - SECURITY 4C.
Sadi felt the room become smaller.
"There was a recording."
Victor's face hardened.
Enzo looked at him.
"You knew."
"I knew the truck had internal surveillance."
Sadi turned toward him.
"You sat in that truck."
Victor looked at her.
"You do not know that yet."
The word yet chilled her more than a denial would have.
Gabriel stepped closer to his brother.
"Did you watch Rosa die?"
Victor's jaw tightened.
"Open the enclosure."
"Answer me."
"Open it."
Sadi looked at Gabriel.
Victor was not trying to recover a trust document anymore.
He was trying to reach a recording before they did.
That meant the archive contained something he feared more than Matteo.
And for the first time since Belladonna, Sadi knew exactly which file she wanted first.
Victor moved closer.
"Press yes."
Sadi looked at him.
"You get nervous when people read fine print?"
"I get impatient when people waste time."
Gabriel's voice became quiet.
"There is another line."
Victor's expression changed.
Sadi leaned closer.
By confirming release, both parties acknowledge that all archive access will be mirrored to external custodial storage.
Sadi smiled for the first time in an hour.
"My father built a dead-man backup."
Victor's face hardened.
"Do not press anything."
Gabriel looked at him.
"You were just telling us to press yes."
"The mirror could go anywhere."
"That is the point."
Victor drew his gun.
Enzo drew his at the same time.
Sadi stood between two weapons again.
"Put them down."
Neither man listened.
Gabriel's injured arm hung uselessly against his side.
His right hand hovered over the confirmation button.
Victor pointed the gun at Sadi.
Everything changed.
Gabriel went still.
Enzo's voice became lethal.
"Move that gun."
Victor did not blink.
"She is the only Moreno key."
"Exactly," Sadi said.
Victor looked at her.
"You think that protects you."
"It protects me until you have what you want."
"After that?"
"After that we find out whether you are as smart as you think you are."
Victor almost smiled.
Gabriel pressed YES.
Sadi did the same.
Victor shouted.
"No."
The glass enclosure unlocked.
At the same moment, red lights began flashing along the ceiling.
ARCHIVE RELEASE INITIATED.
MIRROR TRANSFER IN PROGRESS.
Victor fired at the terminal.
The bullet struck reinforced glass.
The screen did not break.
Enzo slammed into him.
The gun went off again.
Victor's men opened fire.
Gabriel pulled Sadi behind a steel cabinet.
Bullets struck metal hard enough to ring through the room.
Sadi crouched beside him.
"Your family really hates documents."
"Bad documents."
Enzo fought Victor near the entrance.
One of Victor's guards moved along the far aisle.
Sadi saw his shadow before Gabriel did.
"Left."
Gabriel turned and fired one-handed.
The guard dropped behind a cabinet.
Sadi stared at the pistol in Gabriel's right hand.
"Where did that come from?"
"Enzo."
"When?"
"Gym."
"You people pass guns around like breath mints."
"Later."
A mechanical voice announced the transfer.
FORTY PERCENT.
Victor heard it.
"Kill the power."
One of his men ran toward the electrical panel.
Sadi looked at the exposed conduit overhead.
Her father had taught her one thing about backup systems.
The obvious breaker was usually not the important one.
"That panel is a decoy."
Gabriel looked at her.
"You know that?"
"No."
"Comforting."
"But my father designed part of this place."
The guard threw the main breaker.
Nothing happened.
The lights stayed on.
Sadi smiled.
"Told you."
The voice continued.
SIXTY-THREE PERCENT.
Enzo struck Victor against the wall.
Victor drove a knee into Enzo's ribs and broke free.
He fired toward Gabriel.
Gabriel pulled Sadi lower.
The bullet hit the cabinet handle.
A drawer slid open from the impact.
Folders spilled across the floor.
One landed beside Sadi.
ROSA MORENO.
Her heart stopped.
She reached for it.
Gabriel grabbed her wrist.
"Not now."
"That is my mother."
"And Victor is still shooting."
Another round struck the cabinet.
Sadi pulled the file beneath her coat anyway.
Gabriel saw.
He chose not to argue.
The archive voice announced eighty percent.
Victor looked toward the exit.
He was losing.
He knew it.
"Fallback."
His remaining men began retreating.
Enzo fired toward the doorway.
One guard fell.
Victor reached the threshold.
Then he saw a black folder lying near the glass enclosure.
His expression changed.
He ran back for it.
Gabriel saw him.
"Leave it."
Victor laughed.
"This is why Father chose you."
He grabbed the folder.
"You never know which paper matters."
He disappeared through the door.
Enzo started after him.
The archive voice reached ninety-seven percent.
Gabriel stopped Enzo.
"Let him go."
"He has something."
"So do we."
The transfer completed.
MIRROR COMPLETE.
A bank of printers came alive behind the glass.
Sadi stared.
"Printers?"
Gabriel leaned against the cabinet.
"My grandfather trusted paper."
"I am beginning to like him."
"Do not."
Enzo secured the entrance while Sadi opened Rosa's file.
The first page contained her mother's employment photograph.
Rosa looked younger than Sadi remembered.
Alive in a way photographs of the dead always seemed cruelly alive.
Sadi touched the corner of the page.
Gabriel watched without speaking.
Behind the photograph were laboratory reports.
Vascorin-X.
Patient identifiers.
Dates.
One file had been marked in red.
PATIENT G-17.
Sadi looked at Gabriel.
"Seventeen."
His expression changed.
"My age on Route Nine."
She turned the page.
The patient name had been blacked out.
Rosa's handwriting filled the margin.
SECOND EXPOSURE SUSPECTED.
ANTIDOTE ADMINISTERED WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION.
PATIENT RESPONSIVE.
Sadi stared at him.
"My mother treated you."
Gabriel looked confused.
"I do not remember."
Enzo came closer.
"You were sick for two days that spring."
Gabriel looked at him.
"Food poisoning."
"That is what Vittorio told you."
Sadi flipped to the next page.
A photograph slid out.
It was the same image Matteo had shown her parents standing beside seventeen-year-old Gabriel.
On the back Rosa had written something.
Sadi read it aloud.
"He is the boy from the car."
Gabriel went still.
"What car?"
Sadi kept reading.
"If they try again, Tomas knows where I hid the protocol."
She turned another page.
A small microcassette was taped inside the folder.
Enzo found a recorder in the cabinet.
Sadi inserted it.
Her mother's voice filled the archive.
Sadi had not heard that voice in fourteen years.
Her knees nearly gave out.
"If this recording is being played, something has happened to me."
Gabriel looked at her.
She forced herself to keep listening.
"Vascorin-X was used on Vittorio Falcone."
"It was also used on Gabriel."
Gabriel closed his eyes.
"The person ordering the doses is inside the family."
Static crackled.
"Tomas believes Matteo is responsible."
Victor had been right about that much.
Then Rosa continued.
"I am not certain."
Sadi leaned closer to the recorder.
"There is one man who knows more than he admits."
Enzo's face changed before the name came.
Rosa said it clearly.
May you like
"Enzo Rinaldi."
Sadi slowly turned toward him.
