Chapter 16 - The Envelope

Mara stopped Enzo's bleeding in the back of the ambulance while Gabriel opened Victor's memory card on a secured tablet.
Sadi sat opposite him with the analog video drive clenched in both hands.
No one spoke for the first five minutes.
The ambulance moved toward a private surgical suite Mara trusted.
Finally Gabriel looked at Enzo.
"Three weeks."
Enzo kept his eyes on the ceiling.
"Yes."
"You knew Victor might be alive for three weeks."
"Yes."
"You met him twice."
"Yes."
"You paid him."
"Yes."
"And you never told me."
Enzo closed his eyes.
"No."
Gabriel's voice became softer.
That made it more dangerous.
"Why?"
Enzo looked at him.
"Because the first thing Victor sent me was a photograph of you at seventeen lying in a G.F.H. hospital bed."
Gabriel stopped.
Enzo continued.
"He said Matteo had been trying to kill you since before Vittorio changed the succession."
"And you believed him."
"I believed the photograph."
"You should have brought it to me."
"You would have gone after Matteo immediately."
"Correct."
"Without knowing who else was involved."
Gabriel stared at him.
"You made that decision for me."
"Yes."
Sadi watched the same pattern repeat in a different relationship.
Protection used as permission to lie.
Secrets used as proof of loyalty.
People robbed of choices because someone else believed they knew what was safest.
"That is what Tomas did to me," she said.
Both men looked at her.
"He decided the truth would endanger me, so he buried it."
She looked at Enzo.
"Vittorio did it to Gabriel."
Then she looked at Gabriel.
"And you were doing it to me when you told me not to go to Belladonna."
Gabriel opened his mouth.
Sadi lifted a hand.
"Do not."
He closed it.
Mara almost smiled while stitching Enzo's side.
"I like her more every hour."
Sadi pointed at the tablet.
"What is on the card?"
Gabriel returned to the files.
There were scanned trust amendments, board minutes, and internal emails.
The six-hour emergency clause had been inserted eleven months earlier.
Gabriel's electronic signature appeared on the final page.
Enzo looked at it.
"Forgery."
Gabriel zoomed in.
"Not exactly."
"What?"
"They copied my authenticated signature from another document."
Sadi leaned closer.
"Which document?"
Gabriel opened the embedded metadata.
A date appeared.
October fourteenth.
Madrid.
The same date trust counsel had given them.
The source document was an acquisition approval Gabriel had actually signed that afternoon.
Someone with internal access had duplicated the cryptographic token.
Enzo's face hardened.
"Only four people had token access."
"You."
"Legal counsel."
"My executive assistant."
"And Matteo during emergency operations."
Sadi looked at Gabriel.
"So Matteo did not just plan tonight."
"No."
"He prepared the legal theft a year ago."
Gabriel nodded.
Mara finished the last stitch on Enzo.
"You are not leaving this ambulance for anything except an operating room."
Enzo looked at her.
"I have had worse."
"Then you have made worse decisions before."
"Frequently."
Sadi looked at the files on Victor's memory card again.
One document was not a trust amendment.
It was a private email chain between Victor and Matteo from eleven months earlier.
The subject line read CONTINUITY TEST.
Gabriel opened it.
The first message contained a list of hospitals where Gabriel's medical records could be accessed without court process.
The second contained names of three surgeons who would certify incapacity if required.
Leonard Harker was first.
Mara read over Gabriel's shoulder.
"They had the medical team before they had the shooting plan."
Sadi looked at the dates.
"Almost a year before."
Enzo nodded.
"The bullet was the last piece, not the first."
Gabriel scrolled farther.
A message from Matteo read, PRINCIPAL MUST REMAIN ALIVE THROUGH TRANSFER.
Sadi felt sick.
"There it is."
Gabriel's face hardened.
Victor had replied, SHOULDER ONLY, NO CENTER MASS.
Mara swore.
Sadi stared at the sentence.
The fake waiter had not missed the first shot because he was nervous.
The first shot had forced Gabriel to turn.
The second had been designed for the shoulder.
The entire room at Belladonna had been choreography.
"Victor planned the shot."
Gabriel nodded.
"Matteo planned what came after."
Enzo pointed to another attachment.
It was a schedule.
Belladonna dinner.
Security rotations.
Kitchen staff assignments.
Sadi's name did not appear on the original staff list.
Then a later revision added her in red.
She stared at it.
"They changed my assignment."
Enzo looked at the revision timestamp.
"Six hours before dinner."
Sadi thought of Lucia asking her to switch sections because of Mateo's school event.
At the time it had felt ordinary.
Now even ordinary things had fingerprints.
Gabriel looked at her.
"Victor wanted you in the room."
"To test whether Tomas trained me."
Enzo nodded.
"Probably."
Sadi hated that word but let it pass.
Gabriel scrolled to the final message.
Matteo had written, IF MORENO REACTS, CONTAIN HER BEFORE MEDICAL PHASE.
Victor replied with three words.
LET ME HANDLE HER.
Sadi looked toward the window.
"So Victor was not just watching the trap."
Gabriel's voice was cold.
"He built part of it."
For the first time since Enzo's confession, Gabriel's anger had somewhere else to go.
The receiver in Enzo's coat began beeping.
Sadi picked it up.
The tracker signal had returned.
"Victor."
Enzo looked at the screen.
A blinking point moved north.
Gabriel leaned closer.
"Where?"
Sadi enlarged the map.
The signal stopped at an address downtown.
Enzo recognized it first.
"Old trust office."
Gabriel's face hardened.
"Matteo."
Sadi checked the time.
6:02 a.m.
"Why would Victor go to Matteo now?"
Enzo answered.
"Because the temporary transfer is not enough."
Gabriel nodded.
"They need a permanent vote after sunrise."
"When?"
"Seven."
Mara stared at them.
"You are going nowhere."
Gabriel looked at her.
"I am."
"Your artery is barely open."
"Then keep it open for an hour."
"You need surgery."
"After the vote."
"There may not be an after."
Gabriel met her eyes.
"Then make one."
Mara looked ready to hit him.
Sadi understood the impulse.
They left Enzo at the surgical suite under armed protection.
Mara came with Gabriel because she refused to trust anyone else with his medication.
Sadi came because the analog drive and Rosa's file were now the strongest evidence they had.
Gabriel objected once.
Sadi ignored him.
The old trust office occupied the top three floors of a stone building near the financial district.
Its front entrance was crowded with lawyers, private security, and two news crews.
Gabriel watched from the rear seat of an unmarked sedan.
"Matteo wants cameras."
Sadi looked at the press.
"Why?"
"He wants legitimacy."
Mara checked Gabriel's pulse.
"He may get a funeral instead."
Gabriel looked at her.
"Bedside manner."
"You are not in bed."
Sadi noticed a service entrance in the alley.
"Basement loading door."
Gabriel followed her gaze.
"Trust archives connect to the boiler level."
"Another secret hallway?"
"Less secret."
"Disappointing."
They entered through the basement using credentials from a trust employee loyal to Gabriel.
The elevator was locked at the fourth floor.
They used the stairs.
Voices echoed through a conference room above.
Victor.
Matteo.
Sadi stopped near the door.
Gabriel listened beside her.
Victor's voice was angry.
"You changed the deal."
Matteo answered calmly.
"The deal assumed you could recover the covenant."
"I opened the archive."
"And lost the documents."
"Gabriel has them."
"Which is precisely the problem."
Victor's voice lowered.
"You were going to kill him after the vote."
Silence.
Then Matteo spoke.
"Of course."
Sadi looked at Gabriel.
His face did not move.
Matteo continued.
"Did you imagine I would restore you to the family and give you half?"
Victor laughed bitterly.
"I imagined you might remember who made all of this possible."
"You were eighteen when you helped remove Rosa Moreno."
Sadi's body went rigid.
Gabriel touched her arm before she pushed open the door.
Matteo kept talking.
"You were useful because nobody suspects a boy of planning a murder."
Victor's voice became cold.
"Carlo drove."
"Because your hands were shaking."
Sadi closed her eyes.
There it was.
A confession hidden inside an argument.
Mara quietly raised her phone and began recording.
Matteo continued.
"You failed to kill Rosa instantly."
"You ordered Carlo to hit the car."
"And you signed out the truck."
"Because you told me she was trying to destroy the family."
"She was."
Gabriel's hand tightened against the wall.
Victor's voice cracked with anger.
"She was trying to stop you from poisoning our father."
Sadi looked at Gabriel.
The second confession hit harder.
Matteo answered without shame.
"Vittorio was weak."
Gabriel stepped toward the door.
Sadi caught his sleeve.
"Wait."
Inside, Victor said something too quiet to hear.
Matteo laughed.
Then a gunshot exploded.
Sadi shoved the door open.
Victor staggered backward with blood spreading across his chest.
Matteo stood behind the conference table holding a pistol.
For one second everyone froze.
Then Matteo looked at Gabriel.
His expression changed from surprise to opportunity.
He fired again.
Gabriel pulled Sadi behind the wall.
Mara dropped beside them.
Trust security rushed from the far corridor.
Matteo threw his gun onto the floor beside Victor.
"Help."
His voice transformed instantly.
"Gabriel shot his brother."
Sadi stared at him in disbelief.
"You lying bastard."
Footsteps thundered up the stairs behind them.
Captain Dorsey appeared with six officers.
His weapon pointed directly at Gabriel.
"Hands where I can see them."
Gabriel looked at the gun beside Victor.
Then at Matteo.
May you like
Matteo slowly smiled.
"Right on time."
