Chapter 18 - Five Minutes of Fire

Sadi stared at the countdown until the number changed from 5:00 to 4:59.

The sound made her move.

Smoke rolled across the ceiling of the archive corridor in a thick black layer.

The steel shutter behind her had sealed completely.

The shutter ahead blocked the conference room.

There were no windows.

No visible doors.

Only shelves, locked cabinets, and an old red maintenance panel mounted beside the ceiling vent.

Her father would have looked at the maintenance panel first.

That thought steadied her.

Sadi pulled a metal chair beneath it and climbed.

The panel was locked.

She searched the shelf beside her.

Legal binders.

Archive boxes.

A brass letter opener.

She jammed the letter opener into the latch and twisted.

The metal bent.

The latch did not.

4:31.

A deep mechanical vibration began beneath the floor.

Sadi remembered the purge system in the old underground archive.

Thermite locks.

Structural drop points.

Matteo had built the same destruction method into the trust office.

He had not planned an escape route for her.

On the other side of the shutter, someone hit the metal hard enough to make it ring.

"Sadi."

Gabriel.

She jumped down.

"I'm here."

"Move away from the door."

"Why?"

A gunshot answered.

The bullet struck the locking plate from the other side but did not penetrate.

Sadi stepped back.

"That is your plan?"

Gabriel's voice came through the steel.

"It was a test."

"It failed."

"I noticed."

Enzo shouted from farther away.

"Manual release should be inside the corridor."

Sadi looked around.

"Very helpful."

"Tomas designed the mechanical backup on older G.F.H. systems."

She froze.

"Where would he put it?"

"Somewhere a guard would never look."

Sadi looked at the shelves again.

A lawyer would look at files.

A guard would look at locks.

Her father would look at pipes.

She followed the sprinkler line running along the ceiling.

It disappeared behind a cabinet marked TAX RECORDS 1998-2004.

"Of course."

She pulled at the cabinet.

It did not move.

3:52.

Smoke dropped lower.

Sadi wrapped her sleeve over her mouth.

"Cabinet is bolted down."

Gabriel answered immediately.

"Check the base."

Sadi crouched.

Two bolts secured the front feet.

The rear feet were not bolted.

She grabbed the top edge and pulled.

Nothing.

"Too heavy."

Enzo shouted through the shutter.

"Empty it."

Sadi ripped open drawers and threw files onto the floor.

Tax returns scattered through the smoke.

She pulled again.

The cabinet shifted two inches.

Then four.

Behind it was a narrow pipe chase.

A red wheel valve sat three feet inside.

Sadi reached for it.

Her fingertips barely touched metal.

"I found a valve."

Enzo answered.

"Turn it counterclockwise."

She stretched farther.

Her shoulder pressed painfully against the cabinet edge.

The valve would not move.

"It's stuck."

"Use leverage."

Sadi looked at the bent letter opener.

Too short.

She grabbed a steel shelf bracket from the floor and wedged it through the valve spokes.

She pulled.

Nothing.

3:07.

A new alarm sounded.

PURGE IGNITION SEQUENCE ACTIVE.

Sadi pulled harder.

The bracket cut into her palm.

The valve moved half an inch.

"Again," Gabriel shouted.

Sadi braced one foot against the cabinet.

She pulled with everything she had.

The wheel broke free and spun.

A violent hiss filled the pipe chase.

The red light above the shutter changed to amber.

MANUAL FIRE OVERRIDE DETECTED.

Sadi looked at the countdown.

It kept running.

2:42.

"It didn't stop."

Enzo swore.

Gabriel hit the shutter again.

"What changed?"

"Amber light."

"That valve disabled the suppression feed, not the purge."

Sadi stared at the red maintenance panel above her.

"Then the release is still in the panel."

She climbed onto the chair again.

The bent letter opener was useless.

She drove the steel shelf bracket into the latch.

The panel popped open.

Inside were three switches and one mechanical pull handle.

Each had a label.

SPRINKLER TEST.

VENT DAMPER.

ARCHIVE SEAL.

MANUAL EGRESS.

Sadi grabbed the handle.

It would not move.

A small keyhole locked it in place.

"There is a key."

Gabriel shouted through the door.

"What kind?"

"Square maintenance lock."

Sadi heard Enzo laugh once despite the smoke.

"Tomas."

"What?"

"Your father used the same square key for every emergency panel he serviced."

Sadi thought of the red toolbox.

The toolbox they had left behind in her destroyed apartment.

Then she remembered something else.

Her father had given her a keychain when she moved out at nineteen.

Apartment key.

Mailbox key.

A tiny square metal piece she had never identified.

She had used it for years as decoration.

Her keys were in her purse.

Her purse was at Belladonna.

Sadi almost laughed from the cruelty of it.

Then her hand touched the inside pocket of her ruined work pants.

She had put one loose key there before her shift because the purse zipper had broken.

She reached inside.

Her fingers closed around metal.

A tiny square key.

"Dad."

Her voice broke.

She inserted it into the panel.

Perfect fit.

1:56.

Sadi turned the key and pulled the handle.

The shutter locks released with a violent clank.

"Back up," Gabriel shouted.

She jumped down.

The steel door rose three inches.

Then stopped.

Smoke poured beneath it.

Sadi dropped to the floor and reached through.

A hand found hers.

Gabriel.

"Pull."

He pulled from the other side while Sadi pushed upward.

Enzo joined him.

The shutter rose six inches.

Eight.

Twelve.

Sadi flattened herself against the floor.

Gabriel reached under and grabbed her arm.

"Come on."

She crawled beneath the steel edge.

The shutter dropped the instant her legs cleared.

Gabriel pulled her against him as the lock slammed shut.

The archive corridor ignited on the other side.

A deep orange flash lit the seam beneath the shutter.

Heat rolled through the room.

Sadi stared at the metal door.

The countdown vanished in flame.

Gabriel's hand was still around her wrist.

Not gripping.

Checking.

Making sure she was real.

Sadi looked at him.

"You should be in a hospital."

"You should stop getting locked in burning rooms."

"First time."

"Keep it that way."

Mara was kneeling beside Victor near the conference table.

His bleeding had slowed, but his face had become almost translucent.

Enzo stood near the private exit Matteo had used.

The door was open now.

Kendricks was gone.

So was the archive case.

Sadi looked at Enzo.

"Matteo?"

"Gone."

"Dorsey?"

"With him."

"Covenant?"

"Gone."

Sadi closed her eyes.

Everything they had nearly died to recover had disappeared again.

Gabriel saw the frustration.

"We have copies."

"Not of the original signatures."

Enzo lifted the analog video drive.

"We have Belladonna."

Mara held up her second phone.

"And I uploaded thirty-two seconds of Matteo's confession before Dorsey took the first phone."

Sadi looked at her.

"Where?"

"Three places."

"Which places?"

"One medical attorney, one journalist, and my sister."

Gabriel stared at her.

"Your sister?"

Mara shrugged.

"She hates rich men."

Despite everything, Sadi laughed.

Victor made a weak sound from the floor.

They turned.

"You are all missing the point."

Gabriel looked at him.

"You have been shot."

"I noticed."

Victor coughed.

Mara pressed gauze against his chest.

"Do not talk."

"Matteo has the covenant."

Sadi knelt near him.

"We know."

"He does not care about the covenant anymore."

Gabriel's eyes narrowed.

"Then why take it?"

"Because it gets him into the custodial server."

Enzo stepped closer.

"The mirror."

Victor nodded weakly.

"The archive transfer did not go to the cloud."

Sadi stared.

"Where did it go?"

Victor's eyes moved toward Gabriel.

"Old G.F.H. pharmacy lab."

Gabriel recognized it.

"The annex under St. Vincent Industrial."

"Yes."

Enzo swore.

"That site is abandoned."

"The top floors are."

Victor almost smiled.

"Your grandfather distrusted servers almost as much as he distrusted relatives."

Sadi looked at Gabriel.

"So every file we released is sitting in one physical location."

Victor nodded.

"And Matteo knows the purge code."

Mara looked at the clock.

"How long?"

Victor closed his eyes.

"Once he reaches the lab, ten minutes."

Gabriel stood.

His knees nearly failed.

Sadi caught him.

Mara exploded.

"No."

Gabriel ignored her.

"Enzo, vehicle."

Mara stepped in front of him.

"You need vascular surgery now."

"After the server."

"There will be no after if the clotting reaches your heart again."

Gabriel looked at Sadi.

"If Matteo destroys the mirror, she is still facing a murder charge controlled by Dorsey."

Sadi shook her head.

"We have the Belladonna drive."

"One corrupt captain can call it altered."

"Mara has the confession."

"Thirty-two seconds without context."

"Gabriel."

His voice softened.

"My family created this."

Sadi stopped.

"My father hid the truth."

"My brother helped kill your mother."

"My uncle poisoned me and framed you."

He looked toward the smoke-filled conference room.

"I am not going to a hospital while Matteo is driving away with the last clean record of what happened to your family."

Sadi hated that she understood.

She hated more that part of her would have made the same choice.

Mara muttered something that sounded medically insulting.

Enzo found a service elevator still operating on emergency power.

They moved Victor onto a wheeled conference chair because no stretcher was available.

He complained once.

Mara threatened to leave him.

He stopped.

They reached the underground garage.

Matteo had taken the trust vehicles.

One old delivery van remained.

Enzo hot-wired it in under a minute.

Sadi stared at him.

"Why can you do that?"

"Long story."

"Everybody has one."

They loaded Victor into the rear with Mara.

Gabriel sat beside Sadi.

Enzo drove.

As the van pulled into the predawn streets, Gabriel's phone vibrated.

A news alert appeared.

BREAKING: FALCONE FAMILY POWER STRUGGLE TURNS VIOLENT.

A second alert followed.

POLICE SEEK SADI MORENO IN CONNECTION WITH BELLADONNA HOMICIDE.

A third arrived.

MATTEO FALCONE ASSUMES TEMPORARY CONTROL AMID NEPHEW'S MEDICAL CRISIS.

Sadi laughed bitterly.

"He is writing the ending before we get there."

Gabriel looked at the city through the dirty window.

"Then we change it."

St. Vincent Industrial stood beside the river, an enormous brick complex closed after a chemical fire eight years earlier.

Matteo's black sedan was parked beside a loading dock.

Dorsey's unmarked police vehicle sat behind it.

Enzo stopped two buildings away.

"They are here."

Mara checked Gabriel's arm.

"You have maybe thirty minutes before I stop asking permission and knock you unconscious."

"Noted."

"That was not a joke."

Victor opened his eyes.

"The lower lab has two entrances."

Gabriel looked at him.

"You are coming."

Mara shook her head.

"He has a bullet in his chest."

Victor coughed.

"And still more useful than Enzo."

Enzo looked back.

"I can fix that."

Sadi raised a hand.

"Later."

They split.

Enzo and Mara took Victor through the western loading corridor.

Gabriel and Sadi entered through an old pharmacy receiving door.

The building smelled like mold and rust.

Emergency power hummed somewhere underground.

They descended three flights.

A green light glowed beneath a steel door.

Sadi heard voices inside.

Matteo.

Dorsey.

Kendricks.

The lawyer sounded frightened.

"You cannot destroy custodial records during an active trust dispute."

Matteo answered calmly.

"Watch me."

A computer voice announced.

PURGE AUTHORIZATION STAGE ONE COMPLETE.

Sadi looked at Gabriel.

"How many stages?"

"Three."

They entered through a side laboratory.

Rows of old stainless-steel benches separated them from the server room.

Sadi saw Matteo through the glass.

He had the original covenant open beside a terminal.

Dorsey stood at the main door.

Kendricks was handcuffed to a chair.

Gabriel whispered.

"I take Dorsey."

Sadi looked at his useless left arm.

"With what?"

"Bad attitude."

"Your plan is getting worse."

"Consistent night."

They moved along opposite sides of the lab.

Sadi reached the server-room rear door first.

It required a badge.

She looked through the glass.

Matteo's coat hung over a chair two feet away.

A badge clipped to the pocket.

Too far.

Then she noticed an old pass-through cabinet built into the wall.

Her father would have loved it.

She opened the lab side.

The server side was unlocked.

Sadi crawled through.

She landed silently behind the coat.

Matteo was facing the terminal.

Dorsey stood with his back to her.

Sadi took the badge.

The computer announced.

PURGE AUTHORIZATION STAGE TWO COMPLETE.

Matteo looked at Kendricks.

"Final authorization requires custodial witness confirmation."

Kendricks shook his head.

"I will not give it."

Matteo smiled.

"You are not the witness I brought."

Sadi froze.

Matteo turned.

He looked directly at her.

He had known she was there.

Dorsey spun around with his gun raised.

Gabriel hit the outer glass with his shoulder.

"Sadi."

Matteo drew a small injector from his pocket.

Sadi recognized the clear cap with the blue stripe.

Vascorin-X.

She stepped back.

Matteo smiled.

"Rosa's daughter finally came to the same room."

Sadi grabbed a metal tray.

Dorsey pointed his gun at Gabriel through the glass.

"Do not."

Matteo moved faster than Sadi expected.

He caught her wrist.

She twisted free once.

He slammed her against the server rack.

Sadi drove her knee into his leg.

Matteo grunted.

The injector fell.

She reached for it.

Dorsey crossed the room and kicked it toward Matteo.

Gabriel hit the glass door again.

The lock held.

Matteo grabbed the injector.

Sadi caught his arm with both hands.

For one second they struggled over the needle.

Then Dorsey struck Sadi from behind.

Her grip broke.

Matteo drove the injector into her upper arm.

Cold pressure entered beneath her skin.

Sadi gasped.

Gabriel's face changed behind the glass.

May you like

Matteo stepped back and watched her.

"Now," he said softly, "Gabriel gets to decide which Moreno dies for him."
