Chapter 8 - The Page She Missed

I reached Hawthorne before the afternoon bell.

Miriam called the administration office while I signed in at reception.

Harper denied taking Claire's journal.

Claire stood beside her teacher, Ms. Patel, and quietly repeated what happened.

“Mrs. Harper said it was evidence I was making pictures of people without permission.”

Ms. Patel looked furious.

She had witnessed the exchange and offered to write an account.

I asked Harper to return my daughter's property.

She brought the journal from a locked cabinet and placed it on the counter.

Several pages were missing.

Claire's lower lip trembled.

“The blue tray pages,” she said.

Harper claimed they must have fallen out.

Miriam requested that the cabinet and hallway camera recordings be preserved immediately.

I took Claire home.

She sat at the kitchen island while I made grilled cheese, too exhausted to be hungry.

Then she reached into the back pocket of the journal.

“I forgot this was here.”

She unfolded a thin sheet of tracing paper.

It was a rubbing she'd made from the embossed seal on a folder she'd seen outside the foundation records room.

The words were faint but legible.

HAWTHORNE OUTREACH PARTNERSHIP – PRIVATE PLACEMENT.

Below them was a sequence of six numbers.

Claire said a folder with the same seal had been carried to Voss's office the day Harper first punished her.

I called Naomi and read the numbers.

She was silent for several seconds.

“That's not a student lunch account,” she said.

“What is it?”

“It's the last six digits of a vendor number in our payment records.”

The vendor had received more than $300,000 from three accounts connected to Hawthorne over the past year.

The listed service was student opportunity placement.

I looked at the tracing paper.

The school wasn't just misusing lunch money.
