Chapter 15 - The Empty Desk

I called police and documented the threatening message.
I also arranged for Claire to stay home while Miriam pursued immediate protection against retaliation.
The next morning, the empty space at Claire's classroom desk broke something in me.
Ms. Patel sent a packet of assignments and a note saying Claire was missed.
Claire pretended to be pleased by a day away from school.
By lunchtime she was standing at the kitchen window, watching the road.
“Do they think I'm bad?” she asked.
I put the dishes down.
“No.”
“Mrs. Harper said good kids don't make trouble for people who help them.”
I took my time before answering.
“Sometimes making trouble for a bad rule is how you help people.”
She leaned against me without speaking.
That afternoon our attorneys sought emergency relief based on the threatened retaliation and the school's own written terms.
They couldn't guarantee a particular outcome.
But the filing forced the school to address evidence rather than issue another cheerful statement.
Meanwhile, Owen uncovered a separate banking trail.
Several payments from the outreach partnership had flowed into a holding company associated with Adam Kessler.
Some were labeled consulting fees.
Others were labeled placement commissions.
A review of donor-event photographs showed Adam beside Voss and Charlotte at a fundraising reception months after he'd stopped working for me.
I felt foolish for missing it.
Naomi reminded me that trusting an employee wasn't the same as authorizing misconduct.
Late that evening, Peter Lyle called with news from the school kitchen.
Two administrators had arrived demanding that the temporary nonprofit meal arrangement stop immediately.
Beth refused to turn away the children.
The administrators threatened her job.
“She told them she'd rather lose it,” Peter said.
Then he added that Beth had kept a personal log of every meal denied, every confiscated tray, and every order from Harper.
She was willing to speak.

But only if we could keep the school from destroying the record.
