Chapter 14 - The Person I Trusted

I read the settlement agreement while Naomi watched my face.

It proposed restoration of Claire's standing, continuation of the fund, and a confidential payment toward my legal costs.

In return I would withdraw formal complaints and agree that no school officer had knowingly misused funds.

It also asked me to represent that Claire's account was unreliable.

I closed the document.

“No.”

Miriam sent a short refusal before noon.

Minutes later, Naomi asked for a private conversation.

She looked exhausted.

“I should have caught this earlier,” she said.

Then she showed me a chain of old emails between our foundation and Hawthorne.

My former philanthropy director, Adam Kessler, had approved the initial reporting format.

He had accepted summarized counts instead of transaction-level records and ignored Naomi's recommendation for random verification.

Adam had left my company the previous spring to launch his own consultancy.

His first listed client was Wren Family Consulting.

I felt the betrayal before I understood its shape.

Adam had sat in my office when I created the fund.

He'd helped choose its name.

He knew why I insisted that no child should be shamed for needing food.

Naomi produced one final email.

Adam had written to Charlotte Wren: Daniel won't ask hard questions if the children look happy at the donor events.

I stared at the screen.

“He knew?”

“He knew enough to be worried,” Naomi said.

“That doesn't tell us exactly what he did.”

Miriam advised us not to confront Adam until investigators had the documents.

I followed her advice, though it felt like swallowing glass.

That afternoon Claire's enrollment portal stopped working.

A message appeared where her class schedule should have been.

STUDENT STATUS: PENDING ADMINISTRATIVE REVIEW.

By dinner, another parent sent me a screenshot.

The school had circulated a statement implying that Claire's father was exploiting vulnerable students for a business dispute.

Then an unfamiliar number texted me a photo of Claire walking to the car with Ms. Patel.

Below it were five words.
