Chapter 4 - The First Receipt

I didn't return to my office that afternoon.

I met Naomi at a quiet restaurant two blocks away, with Claire safely at my sister's house.

Naomi had worked with me long enough to recognize the difference between anger and a decision.

She brought three folders.

“The first folder is what we approved,” she said.

“The second is what the academy claims it spent.”

“And the third?”

“Things that don't match.”

The donor agreement was clear.

The Callahan Community Table Fund existed solely to provide meals, simple nutritional accommodations, and emergency food support for Hawthorne students.

Administrative expenses were capped.

No disciplinary rule could be used to deprive a child of food funded by our grant.

I remembered negotiating that sentence myself.

Naomi placed an invoice on the table.

A catering firm called Merrow Events had received $42,600 from an account labeled COMMUNITY TABLE PROGRAM SUPPORT.

The description read: hospitality coordination.

“That's not a student meal,” I said.

“No,” Naomi replied.

“And Merrow's mailing address matches an LLC registered by Dr. Voss's brother.”

That was not proof of theft, but it was a reason to demand more records.

Naomi had also found duplicate meal counts reported on dates the school was closed for staff development.

“Maybe they fed children elsewhere,” I said, forcing myself to consider a harmless explanation.

“Maybe,” she answered.

“But the supporting receipts list cafeteria register terminals that weren't active that day.”

My phone rang.

The caller ID showed Hawthorne Academy.

A woman introduced herself as the school board chair, Charlotte Wren.

She sounded friendly until I asked for independent audit access.

“Daniel,” she said, using my first name without invitation, “surely we can resolve a playground disagreement without damaging the reputation of a wonderful institution.”

“Children being denied food isn't a playground disagreement.”

“Think of Claire,” she said.

“I am.”

Her silence sharpened.

“We'd hate for her experience here to become uncomfortable.”

I placed the phone faceup on the table.

Naomi had heard every word.

After the call ended, she opened the third folder.

Inside was a meal-service report stamped APPROVED BY C. WREN.
