Chapter 3 – The Estate They Thought They Controlled
Brenda folded her arms.
"You still need me."
Marcus said nothing.
She continued anyway.
"When your father dies, you'll regret humiliating me. The family estate belongs to me now."
Marcus almost smiled.
"No."
Brenda frowned.
"What do you mean, no?"
"My father changed his will six months ago."
The words hit like ice water.
Rachel stared.
"What?"
Marcus pulled another document from his briefcase.
"The estate isn't divided equally anymore."
Brenda's confidence cracked.
"He rewarded people according to how they treated their family."
"No..."
She whispered.
Marcus laid several printed pages on the table.
His father had quietly hired investigators after hearing concerns about Maya's treatment.
There were photographs.
Witness statements.
Medical reports documenting Maya's pregnancy complications caused by stress.
Even neighbors had written sworn declarations describing Brenda and Rachel spending entire afternoons shopping while Maya struggled alone.
Brenda's hands began shaking.
"He... he wouldn't..."
"He already did."
Marcus replied.
"The amendment was signed months ago."
Rachel grabbed the papers.
Her face turned white.
Brenda's inheritance had been reduced to a small monthly allowance.
Rachel received nothing.
Everything else—including the family lake house, investment portfolio, and majority trust—would eventually pass to Marcus and Lily.
