Chapter 2 – The Legal Notice That Froze the House

Marcus never raised his voice.

That frightened Brenda more than if he had shouted.

She watched him hold Lily against his shoulder while Maya leaned weakly into him. Then she watched his thumbs move calmly across his phone.

"What are you doing?" Brenda demanded.

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

He finished typing, pressed Send, then slipped the phone back into his pocket.

"I'm notifying our attorney."

Rachel laughed.

"An attorney? Seriously? We're family."

Marcus looked directly at her.

"No."

His voice was steady.

"Family doesn't watch a pregnant woman collapse while a sick child burns with fever."

Maya tried to speak.

"Marcus... please..."

He gently squeezed her hand.

"You've protected everyone long enough."

He turned back toward his mother.

"You have exactly one hour to remove every belonging from this house."

Brenda scoffed.

"This house? Half the furniture came from your father."

Marcus nodded.

"I've already photographed everything."

He reached into the hallway closet and removed a small security tablet connected to the home's cameras.

"For the last three weeks, every room except the bedrooms has been recording."

Rachel's confident smile disappeared.

Marcus placed the tablet on the kitchen island.

The screen showed timestamp after timestamp.

Brenda sleeping until noon.

Rachel ordering expensive meals with Marcus's credit card.

Maya cooking breakfast.

Cleaning.

Doing laundry.

Carrying groceries while visibly pregnant.

Holding Lily through coughing fits.

Not once did either guest lift a finger.

The room fell completely silent.

"You didn't come here to help."

May you like

Marcus said quietly.

"You came here to be served.
