Chapter 8 - The Guardian Transfer Agreement

Nathan could hardly hear anything after Vale accused him of appearing on a document he had never seen.

Grace obtained a copy through lawful discovery and compared the purported signature with Nathan's professional records.

The writing looked convincing from a distance but collapsed under close inspection.

The letter forms had been assembled from signatures copied from medical consent paperwork.

A forensic examiner confirmed several identical pen strokes appeared in unrelated documents, indicating digital manipulation.

Nathan had not signed the agreement.

But the paper listed him as a guardian who voluntarily surrendered all interest in Sarah's baby.

It also represented Sarah as incapable of caring for a child, citing psychiatric evaluations she insisted were coerced.

Grace said the documents might explain why authorities had dismissed Sarah's past complaints.

Marcus had been presenting the paperwork as proof that everyone in Sarah's family agreed she was unstable.

Nathan realized the cruelty of the plan.

He had been cast as the brother who abandoned her twice, once in person and again on paper.

A hospital worker arrived with a folded note recovered from Lily's original coat.

On it was a drawing of three stars and the words 'Mommy waits where the water turns.'

Rosa recognized the phrase.

It referred to an old riverside pumping station Sarah and Nathan had visited with their father as children.

Nathan alerted Torres instead of going alone.

Investigators located the building near a hydroelectric channel and found evidence someone had recently sheltered there.

A blanket.

A medical bandage.

A half-finished cup of tea.

In the corner stood a hospital wheelchair.

Attached to its handle was a photograph of Sarah taken the previous day.
