Chapter 12 - A Mother Comes Home

Sarah was moved to the hospital where Owen and Ethan were recovering, with protective security measures in place.
Nathan sat beside her as physicians treated her head injury and evaluated the effects of prolonged coercion and isolation.
For the first time in seven years, brother and sister shared a room without Marcus, Whitcomb, or a telephone between them.
Nathan told her about the final words he had spoken at the mansion seven years before.
Sarah said she remembered every syllable.
He apologized without excuses.
She did not immediately forgive him, but she allowed him to hold her hand.
Sarah explained the first pregnancy and the moment someone had told her her baby was dead.
Months later, Victoria had brought her an infant under a temporary guardianship arrangement, calling the child Lily.
Sarah recognized a birthmark behind the girl's ear and slowly understood that this was her daughter.
She kept quiet because Marcus threatened to remove the child again if she spoke about the hospital.
The new name became both camouflage and a daily reminder of what had been done.
Nathan asked why she had stayed with Marcus.
Sarah described the controlled money, intercepted letters, forged psychiatric paperwork, threats against Lily, and the fear of losing her children in a legal system Marcus seemed able to manipulate.
She had tried leaving before and each attempt had made the dangers worse.
That night, Nathan brought news that the twins were improving.
Sarah covered her mouth and sobbed with relief.
But when she asked about Lily, his silence told her everything.
Sarah sat upright despite the pain.
'Where is my daughter?'
Nathan promised the search was continuing.
She stared at him, frightened and furious.
'Then you have to understand why they took her.'
She opened her hand and revealed a second key she had hidden beneath her bandage.

'Because she can identify the woman who signed her away.'
