Chapter 10 - The Owner of the River

Property records showed the pumping station land belonged to a holding company registered through Whitcomb's law firm.
The managing shareholder was Victoria Kane.
She had told Nathan she was frightened of her son, yet she controlled the building where Sarah had been held.
Torres questioned Victoria again and confronted her with the ownership records.
Victoria admitted helping hide Sarah after the kitchen assault, but insisted she had moved her to protect her from Marcus.
She said she had intended to bring Sarah to a private clinic once the storm passed.
Nathan asked why she had not called an ambulance.
Victoria lowered her eyes and said she feared questions about the forged death records.
Her answer made him furious.
She had valued her reputation over a wounded woman's life.
Victoria finally revealed that Whitcomb controlled a series of trusts through nominees and had threatened to bankrupt everyone involved if his scheme was exposed.
She also said Marcus had never been the mastermind.
He was the violent instrument Whitcomb used to keep Sarah frightened.
When Victoria attempted to leave the police interview, she discovered her chauffeur had vanished.
A black sedan followed the police transport carrying her to a protected location.
Torres diverted the vehicle and brought her to a secure station.
Nathan received a voicemail from Sarah's missing phone.
There were no words at first, only rushing water and the creak of a door.
Then a woman's weak voice spoke.
'Nathan, don't trade the bracelet for me.'
Nathan recognized Sarah immediately.
He spoke her name into the recording even though he knew she could not hear him.
The message ended with the click of a familiar lighter.
