Chapter 5 - A Signature Written in Fear

Grace challenged the emergency petition on procedural grounds and requested verification that Sarah had personally authorized it.

Marcus arrived at court in a perfectly tailored suit, carrying photographs of birthdays, vacations, and carefully staged family dinners.

He spoke about forgiveness and insisted that Lily had misunderstood an accident in the kitchen.

When Nathan entered, Marcus gave him a smile no one else could see.

'You always did like playing the hero,' he whispered.

Nathan wanted to strike him, but Grace touched his sleeve and urged him to let the evidence speak.

Torres described the hazardous journey that had nearly killed the children and the unanswered questions about Sarah's condition.

The judge ordered further investigation and preserved temporary hospital protections.

Whitcomb argued the court should recognize Sarah's alleged written consent.

Grace asked for a live confirmation from Sarah herself.

Whitcomb claimed she could not safely appear because of injuries and emotional distress.

The judge declined to rely on the disputed signature without more evidence.

Afterward Nathan found a woman waiting near the courthouse exit.

She introduced herself as Helen Ward, the former St.

Agnes nurse.

Helen said she had kept a carbon copy of a birth log because the original had been changed while she was on duty.

The log recorded a healthy baby girl delivered to Sarah, and no death during that shift.

Before Helen could say more, a passing cyclist knocked her bag to the pavement.

A brown envelope disappeared in the confusion.

Helen caught Nathan's arm and whispered, 'The copy you need isn't in the envelope.'

She opened her coat to reveal a seam she had stitched herself.

Inside was a tiny brass locker token engraved with a number.

'If I don't reach home,' she said, 'go to the chapel before Marcus does.'
