Chapter 19: William’s Last Letter
They opened the letter together at the old Cole estate.
William had written it during the final weeks of his life.
Hannah read aloud.
My dear Hannah,
If Adrian is standing when you read this, then you have accomplished what the rest of us failed to do.
You gave him the truth.
William apologized for not protecting her sooner. He admitted that he had underestimated Evelyn and overestimated his own power.
He also revealed why he trusted Hannah with the key to the vault.
“You were the only person who loved Adrian without wanting anything from his name,” William had written.
Adrian looked away, overcome by emotion.
The final page was addressed to him.
Son,
You may believe walking again is your greatest victory.
It is not.
Your greatest victory will be refusing to become the kind of man this family taught you to be.
Do not measure your life by what you control.
Measure it by whom you protect when control costs you something.
The letter included instructions to convert the abandoned rehabilitation clinic into a center for patients whose treatment had been denied or manipulated.
Adrian knew exactly what to do.
Six months later, construction began on the William and Laura Recovery Center.
Hannah became director of patient advocacy.
Laura oversaw rehabilitation research.
Maya led an independent ethics and security division.
Adrian remained temporary chair of Cole Industries, but he changed the company’s structure. Employee pensions were protected, hidden debts were eliminated, and executive decisions became subject to independent review.
One evening, Adrian practiced walking in the estate garden.
Caleb followed beside him with the cane.
“Twenty-eight,” Caleb counted.
Adrian took another step.
“Twenty-nine.”
Hannah waited near the old fountain.
Adrian reached her without using the wheelchair.
He took a small ring box from his pocket.
Hannah’s smile disappeared.
“Adrian…”
“I’m not asking you to forget what happened.”
“Good.”
“I’m not asking you to pretend nine years didn’t change us.”
“They did.”
“I’m asking whether we can build something new.”
He opened the box.
Before Hannah could answer, Caleb ran toward them holding his phone.
“Dad, you need to see this.”
Adrian froze at the word.
Caleb had never called him Dad before.
