Chapter 11: Evelyn Returns

Evelyn Cole was waiting in Adrian’s penthouse when they returned.
She sat beside the window in a cream-colored suit, holding a cup of tea.
She looked healthier than she had at her own funeral.
Two armed men stood behind her.

Grant sat across the room with blood on his shoulder. He was alive, but his face was gray.
“You always were difficult to kill,” Adrian said.
Evelyn smiled.
“So were you.”
Caleb stayed close to Hannah.
Evelyn looked at him with mild curiosity.
“The child has your eyes.”
“Don’t look at him.”
“He is the reason everything has become complicated.”
Adrian moved his wheelchair forward.
“You ordered the crash.”
“I prevented a disaster.”
“You stole nine years of my life.”
“I preserved this family.”
Grant laughed bitterly.
“You preserved yourself.”
Evelyn ignored him.
She explained that William intended to expose her financial crimes, remove Grant, and transfer the company to Adrian.
“I gave Grant a choice,” she said. “Protect his future or lose everything.”
“You told me Adrian wanted me gone,” Grant said.
“He did.”
“My father’s recording says otherwise.”
“Your father was sentimental.”
Adrian placed the recovered files on the table.
“This ends now.”
Evelyn glanced at them.
“Copies.”
“How do you know?”
“Because the originals have already been destroyed.”
Maya entered through the service hallway with her team, but Evelyn remained calm.
She had anticipated them.
“Before anyone does something foolish,” Evelyn said, “you should know that every major Cole Industries account is tied to my biometric authorization.”
“You don’t control the company.”
“I control the debt holding it together.”
She opened a tablet.
Cole Industries had borrowed billions through hidden agreements. If Evelyn activated the default clauses, the company would collapse within hours.
Tens of thousands of employees would lose their jobs.
Factories would close.
Pension funds would disappear.
“You can expose me,” Evelyn said. “Or you can save the company.”
Adrian stared at the woman who had raised him.
“What do you want?”
“Hannah’s evidence. Caleb’s legal claim. And your silence.”
Hannah stepped forward.
“You’re afraid of him.”
Evelyn looked at Caleb.
“No. I’m afraid of what William left in his name.”
May you like
Caleb reached inside the faded photograph’s frame.
A thin memory card slid into his palm.
