Chapter 18: The Price of an Empire
The news spread across the country.
Eight-year-old Caleb Hart technically controlled the largest share of Cole Industries.
Reporters surrounded his school.
Television networks parked outside Hannah’s apartment.
Lawyers challenged the trust.
Board members claimed William had been mentally unfit when he created it.
Adrian could have contested the transfer.
Instead, he appeared before the board with Hannah and Caleb beside him.
“My father did not give this company to a child so the child could run it,” Adrian said. “He placed it in trust so no adult could steal it.”
The trust required an independent council to manage Caleb’s shares until he turned twenty-five.
Adrian was named temporary chair only if Hannah approved.
Hannah looked at him.
“You don’t need my permission to rebuild your life.”
“I need your trust to help protect his.”
She signed.
The federal investigation expanded rapidly.
Evelyn, Dr. Hale, Richard Sloane, and several officials were indicted. Grant pleaded guilty and agreed to testify.
He faced years in prison.
Before sentencing, Adrian visited him.
Grant sat behind thick glass.
“I don’t expect forgiveness,” he said.
“You won’t get it today.”
Grant nodded.
“Fair.”
“Why did you save the ledger?”
“Because Caleb looked at me the way you used to.”
“What way?”
“Like I could still choose what kind of man I wanted to be.”
Adrian looked at his brother for a long time.
“You chose too late.”
“I know.”
“But you chose.”
Grant lowered his eyes.
It was not forgiveness.
It was the beginning of truth.
Outside the courthouse, Hannah waited beside Caleb.
Adrian had begun an intensive rehabilitation program with Laura Bennett. He could now walk twenty steps using braces and a cane.
Caleb counted every step.
That afternoon, Adrian reached twenty-one.
Caleb cheered.
Hannah smiled through tears.
Adrian turned toward her.
“I lost nine years.”
“So did I.”
“I can’t change them.”
“No.”
“But I’d like to stop losing days.”
Before Hannah could answer, Maya approached with a sealed envelope.
“It was found inside William’s vault.”
The envelope was addressed to Hannah.
