Chapter 12: The Voice in the Photograph
Hannah had hidden the memory card inside the photograph years earlier.
She had never told Caleb.
“I thought it was lost,” she whispered.
Adrian inserted the card into his computer.
The screen displayed a single audio file recorded nine years earlier.
William Cole’s voice came first.
Then Evelyn’s.
Their argument had taken place in William’s office.
“You can’t give the company to Adrian,” Evelyn said.
“It belongs to him.”
“And what happens to Grant?”
“He will answer for the money he stole.”
“He did what I taught him to do.”
A chair scraped across the floor.
William’s voice became quieter.
“If anything happens to Adrian, this recording goes to the authorities.”
Evelyn laughed.
“You still believe authorities matter.”
The recording continued.
Evelyn described the crash in detail: the modified brake line, the road, and the emergency response team she had bribed.
Grant stared at the floor.
“You told me the car would only be disabled.”
“I told you what you needed to hear,” Evelyn said.
Hannah moved closer to him.
Grant appeared genuinely horrified.
Adrian stopped the recording.
Evelyn’s calm expression had disappeared.
“Give me the card.”
“No.”
She reached for the tablet controlling the company’s debt.
Grant stood.
“Don’t.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“You have disappointed me enough.”
“You lied to me.”
“I made you powerful.”
“You made me a criminal.”
Grant moved between her and Adrian.
For the first time in his life, he was protecting his brother.
Evelyn’s guard raised his weapon.
Maya fired first, striking the wall beside him. The room erupted into confusion.
Adrian pulled Caleb behind the wheelchair.
Grant fought the second guard.
Hannah grabbed the tablet from the table.
Evelyn reached into her handbag and pulled out a small remote.
“If I press this,” she said, “the company falls before sunrise.”
Adrian looked at Hannah.
“Can you stop it?”
“I need the authorization code.”
Only Evelyn knew it.
Then Caleb looked at the old photograph.
“There are numbers behind the picture.”
Hannah tore open the frame.
Written beneath the photograph was a sixteen-digit code.
Evelyn stared at it.
William had left them the key.
But when Hannah entered the code, the screen displayed a warning:
May you like
SECOND AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED—ADRIAN COLE BIOMETRIC VERIFICATION.
The scanner required Adrian to stand.
