Chapter 10 - The Night Claire Was Taught to Forget

Claire did not remember sitting down.
One moment she was standing beside the dining table with Anne's voice in her ear.
The next, she was in a chair with both hands wrapped around a glass of water she had not poured.
You were in the car with me.
The sentence refused to settle into memory.
It moved through her like a key trying the wrong lock.
Dominic stood across the room, speaking quietly with Tomas.
Elena was already calling Agent Holt.
Emily had gone pale.
Martha was crying again.
Claire heard all of them without understanding any of it.
She was fifteen.
She remembered the week her mother died.
She remembered rain against her bedroom window.
She remembered Charles entering at dawn.
She remembered him sitting on the edge of her bed and saying there had been an accident.
She remembered screaming.
She remembered a doctor giving her something because she could not stop shaking.
Then three days disappeared.
Claire's grip tightened around the glass.
"I don't remember the funeral."
Everyone stopped talking.
Emily looked at her.
"What?"
"I remember standing at the cemetery."
Claire stared at nothing.
"But I don't remember getting there."
Martha's expression changed.
Claire saw it.
"You know why."
Martha looked down.
"Charles kept you medicated."
"For how long?"
"Nearly a week."
Claire stood so quickly the chair scraped backward.
"You knew that too?"
"The doctor said you were in shock."
"Which doctor?"
"Dr. Stephen Moreland."
Dominic swore under his breath.
Claire turned toward him.
"You know him?"
"He treated Victor's family for years."
The room became colder.
Martha whispered, "I didn't know that."
Claire closed her eyes.
Another fragment surfaced.
A leather seat beneath her cheek.
Her mother's perfume.
A man's voice outside the car.
Then bright white light.
She opened her eyes again.
"Rebecca."
Emily looked confused.
"What about her?"
"Mom said to ask Rebecca what Dad keeps under the chapel floor."
Dominic reached for his coat.
"Then we ask her."
Elena blocked him.
"No one goes anywhere until federal agents know where you are going."
Dominic looked at her.
"You are becoming irritating."
"That is why you hire me."
Twenty minutes later, Agent Holt authorized a controlled return to the Whitmore estate.
The fire department had cleared most of the house except the basement corridor.
Two federal agents were already there preserving the hidden room.
Charles had not returned.
Rebecca had.
She stood in the breakfast room wearing yesterday's clothes beneath a wool coat.
For the first time Claire could remember, Rebecca Price Whitmore looked older than her husband.
She also looked furious.
"Where is Charles?" Claire asked.
"Gone."
"Gone where?"
"He checked himself out of the hospital at six fifteen."
Rebecca's mouth tightened.
"He took Madison with him."
Emily stared.
"Madison went willingly?"
"I don't know."
Lauren sat at the breakfast table, staring at her phone.
"She's not answering me."
Claire looked at Rebecca.
"The chapel."
Rebecca's face changed.
That was enough.
"What is under the floor?"
Rebecca looked toward the federal agents.
"Charles told me it was an emergency safe."
"When?"
"Years ago."
"How many?"
"Fourteen."
Claire felt rage rise.
One year after Anne disappeared.
"Show me."
The Whitmore estate chapel was small and rarely used.
Charles liked having one because old money was supposed to have private chapels.
He attended church twice a year.
Claire had always found that arrangement efficient.
Rebecca knelt near the first pew and pressed one hand against a dark wooden panel.
"He showed me once when we renovated."
She pulled loose a section of trim.
Beneath it was a steel keyway.
Agent Holt looked at Claire.
"Do you still have the brass key?"
Claire handed it over.
The key from Anne's photograph fit.
A section of floor released with a soft mechanical click.
Tomas lifted the panel.
A shallow compartment had been built between the joists.
Inside were four metal boxes.
Three were locked.
One was open.
Empty.
Claire stared at the empty space.
"Medal four," Dominic said.
Rebecca looked at him.
"What?"
"That open box is the right size."
He examined the velvet lining.
A circular indentation remained.
The pendant had been stored there.
Someone had removed it.
"When did Charles last open this?" Holt asked.
Rebecca shook her head.
"I don't know."
"Who knew it existed?"
"Charles."
She hesitated.
"And Madison."
Emily looked at her mother.
"Madison knew?"
"I saw Charles bring her in here two months ago."
Claire felt the betrayal before she had proof.
Madison had spent years smiling from the center of every family photograph.
She had defended Charles at every dinner.
She had once told Claire that resentment was unattractive.
Now she was gone with him.
Agent Holt opened the first locked box under warrant authority.
Inside were old property deeds.
The second contained cash and passports.
Not one passport.
Seven.
Three belonged to people Claire did not know.
One belonged to Victor Vale under another name.
Dominic's face hardened.
"Your father kept Victor's passport in his chapel."
Claire looked at Rebecca.
Rebecca seemed genuinely shocked.
The third box contained medical records.
Claire saw her own name on the first folder.
Her hands began shaking.
PATIENT: CLAIRE ANNE WHITMORE.
AGE: 15.
PHYSICIAN: STEPHEN MORELAND, M.D.
She opened it.
Medication orders were clipped to the front.
Sedatives.
Sleep medication.
A drug Claire recognized from modern warnings about short-term memory disruption.
The orders extended for eight days.
Elena read over her shoulder.
"This dosage is heavy."
Claire turned the page.
A handwritten note appeared.
Patient continues to report seeing mother alive after reported motor vehicle fatality.
Claire stopped breathing.
Another line followed.
Father requests avoidance of reinforcement of false memory.
The next note was dated one day later.
Patient now uncertain regarding sequence of events.
Claire's vision blurred.
Another.
Patient accepts father's account of accident.
She nearly dropped the file.
Dominic took her elbow.
Claire pulled away.
"Don't."
He released her instantly.
"Sorry."
She forced herself to keep reading.
On the final page was a consent form.
Charles Whitmore had signed it.
Under PURPOSE OF TREATMENT, someone had written acute trauma stabilization.
Under PHYSICIAN NOTES, Moreland had written a sentence by hand.
C.W. insists patient must not retain fixation on events inside vehicle.
Claire read it three times.
Something broke open in her memory.
Rain.
Not bedroom rain.
Windshield rain.
Anne driving too fast.
Claire in the passenger seat.
A black sedan behind them.
"Mom, they're still there."
Anne reaching across and squeezing her hand.
"Don't look back."
Claire gasped.
Everyone turned.
She pressed both palms against the edge of the pew.
The memory came in flashes.
A truck across the road.
Anne slamming the brakes.
A man pulling open the driver's door.
Charles standing under an umbrella.
Not at home.
On the road.
Claire whispered, "He was there."
Rebecca stared at her.
"Who?"
"Dad."
Another flash.
Charles shouting at Anne.
Anne pushing Claire behind her.
Victor Vale stepping out of the black sedan.
A younger man beside him.
Richard Pell.
Claire's knees weakened.
"Richard was there too."
Dominic's expression sharpened.
"Are you sure?"
"He was younger."
Claire squeezed her eyes shut.
The memory shifted.
A hand clamping a cloth over her mouth.
Anne screaming her name.
Charles saying, "Don't hurt her."
Then darkness.
Claire opened her eyes.
"My father didn't just lie about what happened after Mom disappeared."
Her voice barely worked.
"He was there when they took me from her."
Agent Holt took the medical file.
"This changes the investigation."
Rebecca sat down hard on the nearest pew.
"Charles told me you had a breakdown."
Claire looked at her.
"And you believed him."
Rebecca's eyes filled.
"Yes."
The answer was honest.
Claire almost hated it more.
Lauren's phone rang behind them.
She looked at the screen.
"It's Madison."
Claire turned.
"Answer it."
Lauren put it on speaker.
"Madison?"
Her sister was crying.
"Mom?"
Rebecca grabbed the phone.
"Where are you?"
"I don't know."
"What do you mean you don't know?"
"Dad took my phone."
Everyone looked at the phone in Rebecca's hand.
Madison continued quickly.
"I'm calling from a gas station bathroom."
"Why are you with him?"
"Because he said Claire was going to destroy all of us."
Claire closed her eyes.
Of course he had.
"Madison," Claire said, "where is the pendant?"
Silence.
Then Madison whispered, "I took it."
Claire's chest tightened.
"Why?"
"Dad told me it belonged to Mom."
Rebecca flinched.
"He said you were trying to steal family property."
"Where is it now?"
Madison began crying harder.
"He took it from me this morning."
Dominic stepped closer.
"Where is Charles going?"
Madison lowered her voice.
"A bank."
Elena's face changed.
"Which bank?"
"I heard him say Fell's Point and private vault."
Dominic grabbed his phone.
"Black-stone deposit facility."
Claire understood.
Charles had the pendant.
May you like
He knew it opened Anne's final deposit box.
And he was already on his way there.
