Chapter 14 - The Good Man Dominic's Father Never Was

For several seconds, nobody in the ferry terminal moved.

Anne stood beneath the broken windows with one hand wrapped around the flash drive.

Victor held a gun.

Dominic stood between Claire and him.

Charles remained on the floor behind the overturned chairs.

Madison was pressed against the concrete column beside Claire.

Outside, federal agents were shouting commands that had not yet become action.

Claire heard only one sentence.

He was protecting what he did to you.

Dominic's shoulders went rigid.

"Explain."

Anne looked older than the mother Claire remembered.

Of course she did.

Fifteen stolen years were visible in the silver threaded through her hair and the careful way she placed weight on her left leg.

But her eyes were exactly the same.

That made everything harder.

"Vincent found us after Victor forced my car off the road," Anne said.

Victor's mouth twisted.

"Forced is dramatic."

Anne looked at him.

"You put a truck across both lanes."

"You had documents that belonged to the family."

"They belonged to prosecutors."

Dominic took one step toward his uncle.

Anne raised her voice.

"Dominic, don't."

He stopped.

She looked at Claire.

"Your father had agreed to bring me to Victor."

Charles pushed himself upright.

"I agreed to a meeting."

Anne's eyes went cold.

"You removed the tracker from my car."

"Because you were paranoid."

Claire almost laughed at the word.

Even now.

Even with Anne alive in front of him.

Charles still reached for the same weapon.

Anne continued.

"You told Victor which road I would take."

"I did not know he would block it."

"You knew enough to bring Dr. Moreland."

Charles fell silent.

Claire felt the old medical file inside her mind like a weight.

"Moreland was there that night?"

Anne nodded.

"He was in the second car."

"Why?"

Anne's face tightened.

"Because Charles knew you had seen too much at the house before we left."

Claire stared at her.

"What did I see?"

Anne looked at Dominic before answering.

"Vincent Vale meeting Charles in the library."

Dominic's expression changed.

"My father was at the Whitmore estate?"

"Twice that week."

"Why?"

"To negotiate the return of evidence I had collected."

Dominic looked stunned.

"He told me he did not know you had the evidence until after the road incident."

Anne gave a tired smile.

"Vincent lied to his son too."

The words struck with quiet precision.

Claire recognized the pain on Dominic's face because it mirrored her own.

Parents could remain powerful long after death if enough lies survived them.

Victor laughed softly.

"Finally."

Dominic turned toward him.

"You should not enjoy this."

"Why not?"

Victor's eyes shone with bitterness.

"Your father turned himself into a saint because I was easier to hate."

Anne looked at him.

"You tried to have me killed."

"I tried to recover records."

"By running a mother and her child off the road."

"Details."

Claire felt something hot move through her.

She stepped around Dominic before he could stop her.

"You drugged a fifteen-year-old."

Victor looked at her.

"I did not."

"You brought the doctor."

Charles said, "I brought him."

Claire turned.

Charles was standing now.

His face looked strangely empty.

"Why?"

"Because you were screaming."

"I was screaming because men were taking my mother."

"You were going to tell the police things you did not understand."

The rage became so clean that Claire stopped shaking.

"So you made sure I couldn't remember them."

Charles said nothing.

Anne's voice broke.

"Vincent stopped Victor from taking you too."

Claire looked at her.

"And then?"

"Then he made his own decision."

Anne swallowed.

"He decided a fifteen-year-old witness was dangerous to everyone."

Dominic whispered, "No."

Anne looked at him.

"Yes."

"My father would not drug a child."

"He did not inject her himself."

Anne's eyes filled.

"He told Moreland to make sure Claire could not give a coherent statement until he had cleaned up the port records."

Dominic stared at her.

The silence around him changed.

Something old had broken.

Claire almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

"How long did Vincent plan to keep me drugged?" she asked.

"Forty-eight hours."

"It lasted eight days."

Anne's eyes moved to Charles.

"That part was him."

Charles looked away.

"Vincent told him to stop after the immediate investigation passed."

Anne's voice became colder.

"Charles didn't."

Claire remembered the medical notes.

Patient now uncertain regarding sequence of events.

Patient accepts father's account.

Her own confusion had been documented like progress.

"Why did Vincent help you disappear?"

Anne closed her hand around the flash drive.

"Because by then he understood Victor would keep coming after me."

Victor smiled.

"And because she had enough evidence to destroy him too."

Dominic turned slowly.

"What evidence?"

Victor's smile widened.

Anne answered.

"Your father used unreported cash to buy back port concessions after Victor's debts surfaced."

"How much?"

"Nearly fourteen million dollars."

Dominic's eyes narrowed.

"From where?"

Anne looked at Claire.

Claire knew before she spoke.

"My trust."

Anne nodded.

The terminal seemed to drop away beneath her.

"How?"

"The trust held Whitmore shares but also cash reserves from Bell Maritime."

Anne's voice shook.

"Vincent borrowed against them."

"Borrowed?"

Claire's laugh sounded sharp.

"Did he ask me?"

"You were fifteen."

"Did he ask you?"

Anne looked away.

That was answer enough.

Dominic spoke quietly.

"My father stole from her."

Anne did not soften it.

"Yes."

Dominic closed his eyes for one second.

Victor raised his gun slightly.

"Now we understand each other."

Federal agents moved before he finished the sentence.

A red dot appeared on his chest from outside.

Agent Holt's voice boomed through the terminal.

"Victor Vale, drop the weapon."

Victor looked toward the windows.

Then toward Dominic.

For a moment, Claire thought he might fire simply because surrender would offend him.

Anne stepped forward.

"Don't make your last choice as stupid as the first one."

Victor stared at her.

His hand lowered.

The gun hit the floor.

Agents entered from three directions.

They forced Victor to his knees.

His men were disarmed behind the pillars.

Charles raised both hands.

"I was a hostage."

Claire looked at him.

Of course that was his first sentence.

Not Is Madison okay.

Not Anne is alive.

Not Claire, I am sorry.

I was a hostage.

Agent Holt walked straight past him and approached Anne.

"Anne Whitmore?"

"Anne Bell."

Claire noticed the correction.

"I stopped using his name years ago."

Charles's face tightened.

Holt nodded toward the flash drive.

"What is that?"

"A recording Vincent Vale made before he died."

Dominic looked up sharply.

"A confession?"

"An explanation."

"Why didn't he give it to me?"

Anne's expression softened just slightly.

"Because he knew you loved him."

Dominic looked as if she had struck him.

Anne continued.

"He believed if you knew everything, you would spend the rest of your life trying to repair it."

Dominic laughed once without humor.

"He was right."

Anne looked at Claire.

"The drive is encrypted."

"Of course it is."

For the first time, Anne almost smiled.

It was small.

Familiar.

Painful.

"Vincent designed the lock."

Dominic held up his ring.

"This?"

"One part."

Anne looked toward the evidence pouch on the floor where Victor had dropped the key.

"The black-stone medal is the second."

Agents searched Victor.

They found the medal inside his coat.

Claire stared at it when Holt placed it in an evidence bag.

The black stone caught the terminal's weak light.

The object had crossed fifteen years of betrayal to reach her.

Anne looked at the pendant through plastic.

"I wore that every day until Charles took it."

Charles shook his head.

"You left it behind."

Anne turned toward him.

"You pulled it off my neck."

Charles did not answer.

Madison began crying again.

"Dad told me it belonged to Rebecca."

Anne looked at her.

Madison recoiled slightly.

Anne saw it and stopped herself from moving closer.

That small restraint told Claire more about her mother than any dramatic embrace could have.

She had returned to a family that had grown around her absence.

She did not assume she still owned a place inside it.

Claire did not know whether to hug her or demand fifteen years back.

She did neither.

Agent Holt separated everyone for interviews.

Victor was taken out first.

He paused beside Dominic.

"Ask your father why he left you the Baltimore books instead of the real ones."

Dominic stared at him.

"He's dead."

Victor smiled.

"Then ask the dead."

Agents moved him forward.

Charles was next.

Holt did not arrest him.

Not yet.

She informed him that he was being detained for questioning related to evidence tampering and possible obstruction.

He looked at Claire as officers approached.

"This woman abandoned you."

Anne flinched.

Claire did not.

Charles continued.

"Remember that before you decide who the villain is."

Claire stepped closer.

"I have enough villains to go around."

His face hardened.

"I raised you."

"You managed me."

"I fed you."

"With money from my own company."

Madison covered her mouth.

Charles's eyes flashed.

Claire kept going.

"You housed me in a home partly paid for by the trust you stole from."

"You would have had nothing without me."

Claire looked at him for a long moment.

"That is the first lie you taught me."

Agents led him away.

Anne stood ten feet behind Claire.

When the doors closed, neither moved.

Finally Anne spoke.

"You don't have to forgive me."

Claire stared at the empty doorway.

"I don't know you well enough to decide."

The words hurt both of them.

Anne nodded.

"That's fair."

Dominic walked to the broken windows and looked out at the harbor.

Claire joined him after a moment.

"Are you okay?"

He almost smiled.

"No."

"Good answer."

He looked at her.

"Are you?"

"Also no."

"Good answer."

For one strange second, they stood beside each other without trying to solve anything.

Then Agent Holt approached with the flash drive sealed in evidence plastic.

"We have a technical team ready to image this."

Dominic held up his ring.

"You need this."

Holt nodded.

Claire looked at the black-stone pendant in another evidence bag.

"And that."

"Yes."

Anne came closer.

"There is something you should know before you open it."

Claire turned.

Anne's eyes moved between her and Dominic.

"Vincent's recording does not only explain the money he took."

Dominic's face tightened.

"What else?"

Anne exhaled slowly.

"He names the person who helped Charles alter Claire's trust records after the accident."

Claire thought of Richard.

"Richard Pell."

Anne shook her head.

"Richard helped later."

"Then who?"

Anne looked toward the doors where Charles had been taken.

"The person was already inside the Whitmore family."

Claire's mind moved through Rebecca, Madison, Lauren, Emily.

May you like

Anne spoke before she could ask.

"Rebecca Price."
