Chapter 13 - Anne Bell Walked Through the Door

Victor chose the meeting place with deliberate cruelty.

The old Canton ferry terminal had been abandoned for eleven years.

It was also the location in the photograph taken three weeks after Anne's supposed death.

Agent Holt wanted to control the exchange.

Dominic wanted to refuse it.

Claire wanted her sister back.

Charles complicated everything.

"He is not worth trading for," Dominic said.

Claire looked at him.

"I know."

"Then do not let Victor use your father to manipulate you."

"Madison is there."

"That is different."

"I'm aware."

Claire stood over a city map in the federal operations room established near Pier Seven.

The black-stone bank key sat in an evidence pouch beside her.

Victor believed it opened the final trust archive.

He did not know Agent Holt had already requested federal protection of the Washington box.

"What does he want with you?" Claire asked Dominic.

Dominic's expression remained flat.

"Revenge."

"Too simple."

"Sometimes simple is accurate."

"Not with men who build hidden tunnels under shipping companies."

Dominic almost smiled.

"Fair."

He looked down at the map.

"Victor believes my father stole the Vale empire from him."

"Did he?"

Dominic did not answer quickly enough.

Claire noticed.

"Did he?"

"My father forced Victor out."

"That is not what I asked."

Dominic's jaw tightened.

"Victor controlled more of the company before Anne exposed his debts."

"And after?"

"My father used the evidence to remove him."

Claire folded her arms.

"Legally?"

"Mostly."

"That word is doing a lot of work."

Dominic met her gaze.

"My father was not a good man, Claire."

It was the first time he had said it plainly.

"He loved his family."

Dominic looked away.

"He also built a business in ways I would not defend in court."

Claire thought of Anne trusting Vincent Vale enough to make him trustee.

"Did Mom know?"

"Some of it."

"And she still trusted him?"

"She trusted his word once he gave it."

Claire laughed bitterly.

"Everyone in this story seems to have trusted the wrong man."

Agent Holt entered with a tactical coordinator.

"Victor sent a location confirmation."

She pointed to the ferry terminal.

"He wants Claire and Dominic inside at six."

"No agents visible."

"Obviously."

"He also wants the key."

Claire touched the evidence pouch.

"He can have a copy."

Holt shook her head.

"He may test it."

Dominic said, "Then give him the real key."

Claire looked at him.

"No."

"The box is already protected."

"It belonged to my mother."

"Your sister is alive."

The sentence ended the argument.

Claire hated him for being right.

At 5:40, she and Dominic approached the terminal in an unmarked sedan.

Agents watched from positions beyond visible range.

A tracking device sat inside Claire's coat seam.

A second was hidden in the key pouch.

Claire knew plans like that looked flawless until someone unexpected entered the room.

Her life had become a catalog of unexpected people.

The terminal's main hall smelled of salt, mold, and old wood.

Broken ticket windows lined one wall.

Victor stood near the water doors.

He was seventy-one now.

His hair was white.

His posture remained straight.

Charles sat tied to a chair ten feet away.

Madison sat beside him.

Her eyes widened when she saw Claire.

Victor smiled.

"Anne's daughter."

Claire stopped twenty feet away.

"Let Madison go."

"Still direct."

Victor glanced at Dominic.

"She does sound like Anne."

Dominic's voice was cold.

"Release them."

Victor laughed softly.

"You still enter rooms like your father owns the floor."

"My father is dead."

"And yet we are all still living inside his decisions."

Claire held up the pouch.

"The key for Madison."

Victor's eyes moved to it.

"And Charles."

Claire stared at her father.

His face tightened.

He had heard the hesitation.

Good.

"Madison first."

Victor gestured.

A man behind the pillars cut Madison's restraints.

She stood unsteadily.

"Walk," Victor said.

Madison moved toward Claire.

Halfway across the room, Charles shouted.

"Don't give him the key!"

Everyone froze.

Victor turned slowly.

"Interesting time to become protective."

Charles looked at Claire.

"He cannot open that box."

Claire almost smiled.

"Neither can you anymore."

Charles's face changed.

He understood she had reached the vault.

Madison reached Claire.

Claire pushed her behind Dominic.

"Go outside."

Madison shook her head.

"No."

"Go."

"Claire, he has the drive."

Victor's smile disappeared.

Madison continued.

"Dad copied the server mirror before Victor took us."

Charles shouted, "Madison!"

She ignored him.

"Victor has it in his coat."

Victor took one step forward.

Dominic moved between him and Madison.

The room tightened.

Claire held up the key.

"You want this or not?"

Victor stopped.

"Throw it."

"Release Charles."

"You hesitated to save him."

"I still don't want him murdered."

Charles closed his eyes.

The distinction landed exactly where Claire intended.

Victor smiled.

"Anne raised you well."

"Anne didn't get to raise me."

The smile vanished.

"You helped make sure of that."

Claire's voice hardened.

"Release him."

Victor nodded toward one of his men.

The restraints around Charles were cut.

Charles stood.

He did not move toward Claire.

Instead, he lunged at Victor.

It was a foolish, desperate act.

Victor's guard struck him once and shoved him to the floor.

Dominic moved.

Claire grabbed his sleeve.

"No."

The key pouch remained in her other hand.

Victor's eyes narrowed.

"Throw it now."

Claire did.

The pouch slid across the floor.

Victor bent to pick it up.

A gunshot cracked from outside.

Not part of the plan.

Everyone moved at once.

Victor's men drew weapons.

Dominic pulled Claire behind a concrete column.

Madison dropped beside them.

Charles crawled behind the chairs.

Agent Holt's voice sounded through Claire's hidden earpiece.

"Unknown shooter. Stay down."

Another shot shattered a window.

Victor shouted at his men.

Then the side door opened.

A woman stepped into the terminal.

She held no weapon.

She wore a gray coat and walked with a slight stiffness in her left leg.

Claire saw auburn hair streaked with silver.

The entire room stopped.

Victor's face changed first.

Dominic whispered, "Anne."

Claire could not breathe.

The woman looked directly at her.

Fifteen years lived inside that look.

"Claire."

This time there was no phone distortion.

No doubt.

Claire stood before anyone could stop her.

"Mom."

Anne Bell Whitmore took one step forward.

Victor raised his gun.

Dominic moved toward him.

Anne shouted, "Don't!"

Not to Victor.

To Dominic.

She looked at him with terror.

"If you shoot Victor, the truth about your father dies with him."

Dominic froze.

Anne reached inside her coat slowly.

She removed a small flash drive.

"Vincent was not protecting Claire."

Dominic's face hardened.

May you like

Anne looked at Claire.

"He was protecting what he did to you."
