Chapter 9 - The Red Satchel

Priya was found alive the next afternoon in a short-term rental outside the city.

She had gone there voluntarily after a man claiming to be a federal investigator warned that campus security would arrest her.

He had shown her Rebecca's satchel as proof that he knew people from the old program.

Priya realized she had been manipulated when he refused to let her call Elena.

She escaped through a back stairwell and contacted a local women's advocacy office, which helped her reach the police.

Her statement gave us a description, a vehicle plate, and the name he used.

Adrian Vale.

Marcus traced Vale to a private intelligence firm contracted by Holbrook Dynamics.

The satchel, recovered from the rental, contained nothing except an empty envelope and an old photograph.

The photograph showed Rebecca with a young naval scientist I recognized as Dr. Miriam Shaw.

Miriam had overseen the original Vanguard medical clearance program.

I called the number listed in Rebecca's notebook.

Miriam answered without greeting.

“Alexander, have you finally opened the blue box?”

For the first time since Chloe's injury, I could not speak.

Miriam arranged to meet Elena in a monitored government office.

She explained that Rebecca had uncovered hidden defense testing in civilian waters.

When Rebecca sought official protection, Admiral Cross intervened and removed the files under the pretense of classification.

Miriam believed Rebecca had died from an ordinary medical condition, but she had never accepted the timing of the threats.

“Did Cross order the attacks?” I asked.

“I cannot prove that.”

“Then tell me what you can prove.”

She handed Elena a notarized affidavit prepared years earlier.

It identified two shell companies, a compromised procurement officer, and an internal memo instructing staff to refer inquiries about Blue Tide to a nonexistent task force.

The task force was called Vanguard.

Someone was exploiting my old unit's name to shield an illegal program.

Miriam's affidavit named the approving director.

Senator Evelyn Sterling, then a defense policy adviser.

Brantley's mother.

That evening, Chloe asked to see the photograph of Rebecca.

She wrote on her letter board, MOM WARNED ME IN A DREAM.

Then she corrected herself with a trembling hand.

NOT DREAM. RECORDING.

She had found an old audio file on her university laptop three months earlier.

The recording had led her to Blue Tide.

May you like

And she had not been studying the ocean alone.
