Chapter 10 - The Fourth Student

The fourth student was named Jonah Price.

He was a graduate engineer who had worked beside Chloe on the sensor-model anomaly.

For weeks, his name had been absent from witness lists.

That was because Jonah had been assigned to Holbrook Dynamics under a confidential scholarship agreement.

He feared losing everything if he spoke.

I met him at Elena's office, where he admitted he had helped Chloe examine unfiltered acoustic data.

Their findings suggested the program was not merely listening to ships.

It was sending instructions to autonomous surface vessels through disguised test signals.

One test had nearly caused a collision with a civilian ferry.

Chloe discovered the incident in a data correction file.

Her report named the three wealthy students because they held administrative access to the laboratory server.

Chad approved funding.

Brantley handled political outreach.

Wyatt oversaw technical demonstrations for his father's company.

Each had more responsibility than the university publicly acknowledged.

“Did they see Chloe's report?” Elena asked.

Jonah nodded.

“She sent it to the ethics committee.”

“What happened?”

“They called her to a meeting.”

He lowered his eyes.

“I told her not to go.”

Jonah showed us messages from Chloe describing a plan to bring a witness and a recorder.

He was supposed to join her but stayed away after an anonymous warning mentioned his younger brother's school.

“I left her alone.”

I wanted to tell him exactly what that choice had cost my daughter.

Instead I asked for the messages, preserved with their metadata.

Shame did not make Jonah useless.

It made him ready to help.

He agreed to testify.

Then he revealed a second reason he had hidden.

“The data contains your name.”

He turned the laptop.

A command-authentication certificate had been issued to Alexander Vance under a still-valid federal credential.

I had never used that credential after leaving service.

“Who renewed it?”

Jonah pointed to an audit entry.

The renewal occurred on the same date Rebecca was hospitalized fifteen years ago.

The approving official was Nathaniel Cross.

But a second signature appeared beneath his.

Major Daniel Vance.

I read it twice.
