CHAPTER 8 — THE CLAUSE NO ONE EXPECTED

The hidden clause had been written by Elena Cruz herself.

If any Ibarra director attempted to steal, dissolve, or conceal Renata’s inheritance, voting control of the disputed shares would temporarily transfer to Renata until a court completed its review.

The clause had one purpose.

To prevent the family from destroying the company before Renata could claim it.

“They thought the trust only gave you ownership,” Lucía said. “They never found the complete version.”

“But Camila found it,” Renata replied.

Daniel rewound the recording.

Camila had clearly warned Alonso that emptying the company would activate the clause. Yet Alonso had continued with the plan.

“He must have another way to stop you from exercising control,” Daniel said.

Renata remembered the documents Alonso had repeatedly asked her to sign.

A new will.

A marital agreement.

A medical authorization allowing him to make decisions if she became “temporarily incapable.”

“He wanted to declare me incompetent,” she said.

Lucía immediately contacted the civil court registry.

Within an hour, they found a sealed petition prepared by Camila Serrano.

It claimed Renata suffered from paranoid delusions, unstable behavior, and an obsession with imaginary financial crimes.

Attached were statements from Alonso, Evangelina, three relatives, and a private psychiatrist Renata had never met.

The petition had not yet been filed.

Its intended filing date was October 14.

Her birthday.

“If the court declared you incapable before the trust transferred,” Lucía said, “Alonso would manage the shares as your husband.”

Daniel scrolled through the exhibits.

“They built a history.”

There were edited messages that made Renata appear confused. Photographs of medication bottles she had never used. Accounts from family members claiming she heard voices and suffered violent episodes.

Even the anniversary dinner had been prepared as evidence.

Evangelina’s insults.

The kicked chair.

The laughter.

They had expected Renata to lose control.

If she shouted, struck someone, or created a public scene, the family would describe it as another breakdown.

But Renata had remained calm.

“To the evidence,” she whispered.

For the first time, she understood why Alonso had looked terrified.

His plan required her to appear unstable.

Instead, she had behaved like the most controlled person in the room.

Daniel’s phone sounded.

“The company board has scheduled an emergency meeting tomorrow morning.”

“Who called it?” Renata asked.

“Octavio.”

Lucía looked concerned.

“Until the court recognizes the trust clause, you have no formal authority to enter.”

Renata folded Elena’s letter and placed it inside the original envelope.

“Then we obtain the order tonight.”

At 2:40 in the morning, a judge granted Renata temporary voting authority based on evidence of attempted fraud.

By 8:00, television crews surrounded Grupo Ibarra’s headquarters.

Someone had leaked the story.

Reporters shouted questions about stolen housing funds, secret shareholders, and the Ibarra family’s missing son.

Renata entered through the front doors with Lucía and Daniel beside her.

Employees stopped working as she crossed the marble lobby.

At the elevators, Alonso waited alone.

“You found the clause,” he said.

“Yes.”

“You still don’t understand the danger.”

“You are the danger.”

“No. My mother is desperate, but she is predictable.”

“And you?”

Alonso moved closer.

“I know how to survive.”

The elevator doors opened.

Before Renata stepped inside, Alonso spoke quietly enough that only she could hear.

“Tomás contacted me last night.”

Renata turned.

“He said he had proof concerning your mother’s death.”

“Where is he?”

“He wanted to meet me before the board meeting.”

“Did you meet him?”

Alonso shook his head.

“He never arrived.”

The elevator doors began to close.

Then Alonso placed a phone in Renata’s hand.

On the screen was a live video feed.

Tomás sat tied to a chair inside an unfamiliar room.

Behind him stood Evangelina.

May you like

She looked directly into the camera and smiled.

“Come to the boardroom, little girl.”
