CHAPTER 14 — THE LAST LIE OF OCTAVIO IBARRA
Octavio did not resist when officers surrounded him.
He looked at Renata with hollow eyes.
“I did not order Elena killed.”
“The confession says you ordered the car destroyed,” Lucía replied.
“Yes.”
Silence filled the church.
Octavio explained that Elena intended to deliver the company’s records to federal authorities. He feared the evidence would destroy Grupo Ibarra before innocent employees and investors could be protected.
He instructed Rafael to disable Elena’s vehicle so she could not leave that night.
“I ordered him to remove the distributor cap,” Octavio said. “Nothing more.”
Rafael stepped forward.
“I never received that order.”
Octavio stared at him.
“Evangelina intercepted the message,” Renata said.
Octavio nodded.
“She changed the instruction. She had the brake line cut.”
“You started it,” Renata replied. “You tried to control my mother. Evangelina simply went further.”
“I was a coward.”
“Yes.”
He did not ask for forgiveness.
That was the first honest thing Renata had heard from an Ibarra all day.
Alonso stood beside the altar as investigators collected the laptop and recordings.
“You cannot use anything I said,” he told Lucía. “Renata told me she was not recording.”
“She wasn’t,” Lucía replied. “The church was.”
Alonso looked at Renata.
“You planned this.”
“I learned from your family.”
Evangelina was arrested at the mansion that evening.
She attempted to leave through a service entrance wearing a housekeeper’s coat and carrying a suitcase filled with cash, jewelry, and false passports.
Camila was detained at the airport.
Ariadna agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration at sentencing. She surrendered the real biometric equipment, forged documents, and messages proving Alonso had directed the plan to frame Renata.
Tomás turned himself in.
He admitted moving company money without authorization but provided evidence that he had returned stolen pension funds to their rightful owners.
Octavio resigned from Grupo Ibarra and accepted responsibility for obstruction, conspiracy, and decades of concealed fraud.
The following morning, Renata stood before the company’s employees.
Cameras filled the auditorium.
Rumors suggested she would liquidate the entire business.
Others believed she would sell her shares and disappear.
Renata stepped to the microphone.
“Grupo Ibarra was built with stolen work, hidden payments, and silence,” she began. “But thousands of honest employees should not lose their livelihoods because the people above them chose greed.”
She announced an independent restructuring.
The housing funds would be restored.
Properties purchased through false companies would be sold.
Employees would receive board representation.
The Cruz Trust would fund legal support for every family affected by the scheme.
For the first time, applause inside Grupo Ibarra was not directed toward an Ibarra.
After the meeting, Lucía approached Renata with a small sealed envelope.
“This arrived from the detention center.”
It was from Alonso.
Inside was a signed confession and a handwritten letter.
Renata read only the first line.
I know you will never forgive me, but there is one truth I kept from my mother.
Beneath the letter was a key.
It opened a safe-deposit box registered under Elena Cruz’s name.
Inside were childhood photographs, Elena’s original share certificate, and a video recorded days before her death.
In the video, Elena looked directly into the camera.
“If Renata ever sees this, then I failed to protect her from the Ibarras.”
Renata covered her mouth.
Her mother continued.
“But there is something Evangelina never knew. The trust was not my final protection.”
Elena lifted another document.
“The company’s most valuable land was never owned by Grupo Ibarra.”
The document named a second beneficiary.
Renata read the name and felt her entire body go still.
The land belonged jointly to her and someone identified only as:
Elena Cruz’s second surviving child.
