CHAPTER 13 — THE CHURCH OF BROKEN VOWS

Lucía’s father had been living under another name in Querétaro for more than twenty years.
Only three people knew where he was.
Lucía.

Rafael.
And Octavio.
Someone inside their group had given Alonso the address.
Renata entered the church alone just before sunset.
The pews were empty.
Candles flickered beneath the stained-glass windows.
Alonso stood near the altar where they had exchanged vows six years earlier.
Lucía’s elderly father sat in the front pew. His hands were not tied, but a man in a dark jacket stood behind him.
“Let him leave,” Renata said.
Alonso looked exhausted.
“You always were direct.”
“You knew how my mother died.”
“Yes.”
“And you continued the accounts listed in her ledger.”
“Yes.”
There was no denial left in him.
Only calculation.
“Why?” Renata asked.
“Because by the time I understood what my mother had built, I was already living inside it. Every company contract, every property, every political relationship was connected to those payments.”
“You could have exposed her.”
“And destroyed thousands of employees?”
“You protected yourself.”
“I protected the system that fed all of us.”
“It did not feed the families whose housing money you stole.”
Alonso’s composure cracked.
“I was going to replace it.”
“With what?”
“The company expansion. Once we closed the airport contract, every peso would have been returned.”
“That is what thieves always say.”
He walked closer.
“I did love you.”
“You studied me.”
“At first.”
“You married me for the trust.”
“At first.”
“You forged my identity.”
“To keep the company alive.”
“You let your family humiliate me.”
His eyes dropped.
“I needed my mother to believe I still belonged to her.”
Renata stared at the man she had once loved.
Every apology contained another excuse.
Every confession attempted to preserve one small corner of innocence.
“Where is the evidence you threatened me with?”
Alonso pointed toward the altar.
A laptop displayed hundreds of audio files recorded inside their home.
He had captured Renata repeating banking terms, account numbers, and approval phrases while she worked remotely.
Camila had edited the recordings into false authorizations.
“There are copies,” Alonso said. “If I am arrested, they will be released.”
“To whom?”
“Journalists. Investigators. The board.”
“You would destroy me.”
“I am asking you to negotiate.”
“You mean surrender.”
“I mean survive.”
Renata removed her phone from her handbag and placed it on a pew.
“No recording,” she said.
Alonso smiled faintly.
“At least you are finally learning.”
What he did not know was that the church’s sound system had been activated remotely.
Every word was transmitting to Lucía, Daniel, and federal investigators waiting two streets away.
Renata moved toward Lucía’s father.
“Release him, and I will give you the original ledger.”
Alonso looked at the leather book in her hand.
His restraint disappeared.
He gestured toward the man behind the pew.
Lucía’s father was allowed to stand.
As he passed Renata, he whispered, “The altar.”
Renata did not react.
The elderly man walked toward the side exit.
Alonso held out his hand.
“The ledger.”
Renata placed it on the altar.
He opened it and scanned the final pages.
For the first time, true fear appeared in his eyes.
“This is not complete.”
“It is.”
“No. There was another page.”
“What page?”
“The page with Octavio’s final confession.”
Renata looked at Lucía’s father.
He had stopped at the exit.
Alonso realized the truth at the same moment.
The old man had removed something from the book years earlier.
Lucía’s father reached into his coat.
He pulled out a folded sheet of paper.
Alonso lunged toward him.
The church doors burst open.
Federal officers entered from both sides.
The man behind the pew tried to run.
Alonso remained frozen beside the altar.
Lucía stepped into the church.
Her father gave her the missing page.
She read it once.
Then looked at Octavio, who had entered behind the investigators.
“This confession doesn’t only implicate Evangelina and Alonso,” Lucía said.
May you like
She raised the page.
“It says Octavio ordered Elena’s car destroyed.”
